My Dad handed down to me my uncles 1982 280ZX bought off the line. One of two things happen when I try start it. It will either start and run till it gets to running temp and then die and then it won't turn over, or it just won't turn over. I've changed relay switches, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark cables. I cannot find the problem. Any suggestions???

A motor needs 3 things to start:
-Proper air
-Proper fuel
-Proper spark

When it's having the starting issue, does it have spark? Does it have fuel?

 

Thank u Nismopick. It does have fuel and spark. I am going to change the whole distributor next, after that I think the only thing I can change is the ECU.

 

I would check the AFM, TPS, Ignitor, and CHTS, and each connector, before anything else.

P.S. I did change out the AFM already. That was my first change

 

So dont keep guessing and buying parts. You could have bought some diagnostic tools with that money. Do some tests. Find out whats wrong. Ask how to test spark or air and fuel if you dont know. Or you might as well throw away 300 dollars and enjoy your new lawn art.
