Check the CHTS & plug.
Set timing.
Check & read spark plug tips.

My gas is fresh 91 octane that was like the first thing I checked

When my mileage starts to drop (I drive 80 miles a day, so I tend to notice these things) this is what I check:

Air filter
Replace fuel filter (it depends on how long it's been in there... I usually replace every year)
Do an oil change (and filter)
Check tire pressure

Now, I'm not getting 11mpg when this happens... usually down from 25 to 20. But looking at the ticker, it's usually time for an oil change.

11mpg... If I had to take an educated guess, the CHTS is dirty. On the passenger side of the engine block, just under spark plug #6 (toward the firewall) you'll see it. Unplug it and clean the connectors really good with a small wire brush. Remove it from the block and take a clean cloth...wipe it off good. Don't use WD40 or anything like that, just a clean cloth. Put it all back together and fire it up, see what happens.

i cheched ther for the sensor cuz my 81 has it ther but this car has so,ething else there it has a conection that has an inlet and outlet for coolant no wires or annything mine just has 4 sensorsd in the front

k1drift 10-18-2011 02:52 PM

im having the same problem...

Lupe 10-18-2011 07:58 PM

@k1drift what have u checked on ur car???

rogerz 10-18-2011 09:43 PM

I believe the 79 did not have the chts back by #5 they were still using the coolant temp sensor like the 77/78 Z. it would be the one with two wires. coolant temp for gage is one wire. ground it out and see what your temp gage does (ignition on)

my gauge one work fine mine has 2 sensors with 2 wires i cleaned them both out and still nothing. should i just replace them?

If you're running that rich, there are more than likely 2 issues. You're not getting enough air, or there's a sensor telling your system that it's not getting enough fuel.

Try cleaning the TPS (throttle position sensor) with some decent electrical cleaning spray. Don't forget to disconnect the battery...just for fun. Then blow it off after it's dry with some canned air.

Reconnect the battery, fire it up and see what happens.

I keep hearing about the TPS being an issue. Doesn't it just get used for fuel enrichment at idle which would basically just help the car keep from stalling.... Shouldn't have any effect on the fuel mileage....

ok so i cleaned everything and still nothing i still tried that tps thing tho... im starting to think its something in my gas tank because i hooked up a guage and drove it and i saw the fuel pressure drops alot at high rpms and leans out the mixture and at idle runs really rich so posibly rusty gas tank or somin ill check it out tho and keep updated..
