Lots of people have. I purchased a strut bar that looked like it was made in a shop. The welds are clean but very visable and the materials only so-so.... and it was expensive. about $200.

Late model cars have fancy chromed strut bars for under $50 sometimes!

Anyway, I'd say try to make a triangular strut tower bar for the front and back. Here's a picture of mine. It is suggested that you get tighter than stock springs first. I didn't but I didn't know any better. It still helps keep things more solid on the freeway.

does your strut bar connect to the car at the hood latch also or just at the towers?

It does connect at the firewall. There are two brackets that go right over the mounts for the hood latch. I put new stainless bolts in there to secure both the strut brace and the latch.
