offset question guys

i am shopping for my 80 280zx and am wheel hunting.. my questiones are
how will off set effect the car?
right now im intersted in these rims that have +20 offset will this effect the stance?
please any advise on how - and + offset effect the car, particularly the bigger numbers, 15 to 40.
i do have steady pay roll so any thoughts on how to correct offset will be appreciated.
any rims chosen will be 15 or 16 inch

Before you do any wheel searching, you need to understand the difference between + and - offset...

First Google result:

what does positive offset mean versus negative offset in regards to wheels? - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com)

Zero Offset
The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive
The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. We have test fitted thousands of different vehicles for proper fitment. Our extensive database allows our sales staff to offer you the perfect fit for your vehicle.
So in a nut shell, if you put +20 offset wheels on the stock 280zx hubs, you will shove the wheel in more, not out more. :D

thanks dude my world is now complete. lol so much for the sweet set of 92's i wanted to buy..

NismoPick Apr 26, 2012 10:46 AM

Check out MSA's wheel selection... or buy a set of hub adapters and then you can run virtually any wheel you want (that will fit within reason).

koprutzxt Apr 26, 2012 11:06 AM

hub adapters?? to do what??
to balance the offset depending on what wheels i choose?
i.e if i choose +45 wheels i need +45 adapters??
i want my wheels to pop out so i can roll the fenders.can adapters do this?
also any idea on the front hub size on my z ? i read once 73mm??

Good luck with wheels for the 280ZX. Most modern wheels run around +35 offset on stock cars. The Datsun runs about +0 offset so you're already 35mm stuck in too far from center. If you notice on the 280ZX the stock wheels sit WAY in the fender well already... I'm running 17" x 9.5" with a -19mm (yes MINUS 19 mm) and the fit is great but I needed to roll the fenders to get them to fit nicely without rubbing.

I had an alignment done but as you know there is no adjust in the rear. Regardless even with the Tokico springs and the drop that follows the car was still in spec in the rear. You can slot the rear cross members if you need adjustment....

FricFrac Apr 28, 2012 03:21 PM

Oh and here is the before and after from the side - doesn't show the offset though...

koprutzxt Apr 28, 2012 03:33 PM

i litterally tried to pull them right off my screen... jammed my finger ha ha i like em

did you slot yours??
and i been trying to knock out wheels before my allignment year warrenty goes out??
and ima probally jack that exact offset found some "rays" here intown with negitve 19 and 17"s thier purple but i can score them for 800 super light as well..
same shop has some white 5 ziegans that fitt. what do you think about 18's on the zx

Tsuka89 Apr 28, 2012 10:00 PM

too big imo, but it is your car, not mine :080:

They are the exact same diameter as the stock wheels. 40 series is a good performance sidewall - I find the 60's on my 240Z are too much but since it's a full Nismo suspension it's about all that gives on it. I think 17s are perfect on the S130, 16s for the 240Z and 18s on the 300ZX. 19s look fine on the 350Z and 370Z.

You'll also have a hard time finding anything performance/size wise in anything smaller than a 17" now....

18s are getting a little big for the S130 - you won't have any side wall at all if you can even get a tire that works.

I really like the Rays - they make nice stuff but it's not cheap. What is the width of the wheel? Any pics of the actual wheel?

I didn't slot my rear cross member because it was still in spec. I may slot them if I go to coil overs...

koprutzxt Apr 30, 2012 10:18 AM

they are legit .my tuner guy is a tokyo man and we are good friends i have bought him alot of cutomers thats why they are on a steal for me..
.. maybe 8 0r 9 inch wide not sure but ima test fit if i want to commit..

225-50-15s'. There are 4 or 5 brands that make them again. And they go on 8" wide wheels. I love the way they look on my Z. And I plan on getting new ones here in the near future.:icon_keel:

koprutzxt May 14, 2012 08:53 PM

ok so after a long search, tons of test fits and a bunch of idiots who dont know what a lug pattern is.. and my freinds constant nagging about how i can just buy a perfect fit.. i decided to go with some custom diamond rims
so yall guys shoot me some spec numbers ..
im thinking 7or 8 in the front and 8 0r 9 in the back and for sure gonna have a fat lip.. not sure about diameter yet but 15,16,17 maybe so include the tire diameter in your specs...
im also thinking aBOUT -20 offset inpart due to FricFrac clean fit..
i am for sure going through with the purchase after more research on what looks good and works with the z..(function as well as style)
thier rims are pretty affordable for custom, and im hoping my purchase will help more z's get that wide tire, dished lip we all deserve..."with-out mods"

16's are too big for an S130. 17's are overkill and look like a giant donkey asshole.

I'm on 15s
http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...37885573_n.jpg
15x8 -37
15x10 -50
195/50-15s all around.

I'm going down to 14s because even 15s are too big for what I like.

In most cases I'd definitely agree with you, but I have to say FricFrac's car on 17's looks pretty damn clean. :D

koprutzxt May 14, 2012 11:54 PM

Hey Pantiac kid...

.....
how come your only using 195's ?? on my stock snowflakes i use 215 and 225
any mods to the suspension?
and if you want 14's id be more than happy to donate to the cause, in exchange ill properly recycle your rims for you :033:

and can you post a pic from the side??

PurePontiacKid May 15, 2012 05:42 PM

because when you buy proper tires, you don't need to buy oversize ones that look like a bag of dicks.

I've already got 14s, just need to get them rebarreled and they will go on. going with 185/55's on these

yes, I have quite a few suspension mods.

koprutzxt May 15, 2012 10:32 PM

is your car street worthy ?? aside from avoiding speed bumps
how did you get it that low, custom coilover fab???
and what kind of fire bird do you have?? i have always told myself i would sell one of my z's in heart beat, for an old school v8 trans am with square headlights(not flip ups) and t tops of course, near me .
all are shit here in texas, we're more of an IROC kinda town :102:

PurePontiacKid May 16, 2012 05:34 PM

lol is my car streety worthy? really? it's my ****ing daily driver.
