frame rails

my frame rails are rusting through, and I was wondering what the best/least expensive way to fix it is.

If the frame rails are rusting through the bottom (like most do), you can clean up the area with a grinder and weld new sheetbetal to the bottom (10 guage steel is good for this purpose). Just make sure the car is on an absolutely flat patch of ground, because unifornity is the most important.

You know since where on the question about the frame okay say you do repace the bottom of the frame what about the part above the frame. Say like your going to jack up your car wouldnt the new steel just be pushed up with the old steel. Cause see thats what im looking at on my z. See if i replace the bottom part like you suggest wouldnt it just keep breaking up if i jacked up it with a jack. Thats my question

In that case, you would have to use a thicker metal on the bottom frame rail. If you're worried that the frame will accordian up, don't worry about it.

Another thing, what I do is put a block of wood on the jack, it helps spread the load and won't bust through your frame rails.

i hope your not jacking up your car in its frame rails????? thats one of the worse places to jack it up on... if your going to jack up the front always kack it up on the front cross memeber or if your going to jack up the rear align your jack on the center of its dif.. the frame rails will crush under all that weight of the car...

with the factory scissor jack, you're supposed to put the "clip" over the lower sheetmetal edge below the doors. That is where the edges of the unibody come together. I always jack up there (unless I use a floor jack where ice suggested) and nothing ever bends. I did notice that a previous owner jacked up on the frame rails on my car and bent it a bit. At least mine is not rusting.

Yeah, seems to be a common problem. Someone did the same thing on my car. The rail collapsed, so they moved the jack and tried it again. They figure it out after about three or four times, on each side. Just a lack of knowledge, that is all.
