Coilover options

I think I have decided to go with coilovers, not right this second but soon. Not only will they be great for handling but I plan to be getting new wheels too so this will also help open up what wheels I can run. Iv been looking at all my options and wanted to see what you guys suggested. Just a little mad because I just bought the Tockiko HP kit. I have been searching with no luck, would like to know what the maximum spring rate can be run with these shocks?
It seems like I have 3 options..
1) Ground Control Weld on kit from Techno Toy Tuning- $399
2) Modern motorsports, not sure on price but probably expensive?
3) A1 Racing kit, seems very inexpensive. Only problem is I am not sure what I need from them. I know I need the coilover kit and then choose some springs. Just not sure what sizes I need for everything??http://www.a1racing.com/index.asp?Pa...S&Category=253

Heres the kit from techno toy tuning...

Im open to any suggestions. Also Im not sure what I should be going with for a spring rate. Its a street car but I plan to do a lot of AutoX too.

Thanks in advance
Rob

ktm im going with modern-motorsports, hes one of my z friends local, i get a bit of a deal, but the front will be little more than 250 ish, and rear it depends what setup you use, there is a 12 way adjust kit that cost like 750+, the regular rears im not sure, i gotta phone ross here quick, so im gonna get some info.

KTM200-280zxt 01-03-2007 07:15 PM

Thanks shady...
I was just going to go with the custom setup cause it was so cheap. But $250 for the front would be awesome! I sent him a message but I should really call him too. I want to know if I could modify my new Tockiko's to be used with his coilovers to save some money.

SHADY280 01-03-2007 07:20 PM

shocks never need to be modified to work, they will work on any setup, unless it requires longer travel than stock, like a big 4x4. the tockikos are what he recommends.

KTM200-280zxt 01-03-2007 07:30 PM

Well there the non adjustable Tockikos. And for the rear they have the spring perch which would probably just need to be grinded of, no big deal.

Thanks
Rob

SHADY280 01-03-2007 07:48 PM

the rear perch actually stays there with his setup, it actually uses that as a coilover perch for the base where the adjuster is, same with the front. its really less work than you think

KTM200-280zxt 01-04-2007 03:44 AM

alright thanks shady. I will definately have to call him then, so I can better understand how his setup works.

rxKaffee 01-05-2007 12:12 AM

I'm considering putting z31 87+ turbo strut assembly on my car for the big brake capabilities and 5lug, and inserting s13 coilovers in the front, as described on redz31.com

unsure of solution for rear.

snwbrderphat540 01-05-2007 12:18 AM

go on arizonazcar.com to see soem cool setups... i cant remember if its only s30's or what... but i like them as well

KTM200-280zxt 01-07-2007 07:31 AM

I talked to Dave over at Arizona Zcar, they wont be making anything for the ZX for a couple of months.

I also breifly talked to Ross at Modern Motorsports. Dont quote me on prices but I have a good idea. Like what was stated in an older thread the fronts are about $220 w/ out struts. and then the rears are listed on their site for $665

SHADY280 01-21-2007 07:08 PM

i just phoned ross, its gonna cost a grand for mine, so im looking at techno toy tuning, or the a1 racing. i dunno, its just too much coin for me right now.

KTM200-280zxt 01-22-2007 03:38 AM

hmmm. Well let me know what you decide because if you dont mind I would like to copy you. That way Im not the only one stuck trying to figure out to make my own coilovers. The Tech. Toy Tuning weld on kit is $399 for everything and you can choise your spring rate and everything. The A1 kit is probably even cheaper. Im just not even sure what I need to buy from them, what size springs and everything?

Rob

SHADY280 01-22-2007 07:06 AM

thats the exact hole im in, i emailed both companies and am waiting a response. the weld on kit is good for the front, but you cant weld to the rear shocks ross tells me due to the fact that there is valving inside and fluid/gas. the fronts all you have to do is remove the cartridge and go to town. ross has reasonable front coils, 250 cdn for me. but the rear is 785 cdn, i just cant afford that, so thats why im looking into other options, it may just come down to the point where i gotta dish out the d'oh for ross' kit. maybe if you email both companies as well we can both compile info and show there is intrest for this setup.

KTM200-280zxt 01-22-2007 10:04 AM

I have emailed TTT(tech. Toy tuning) they said the only option they had for the ZX was the weld on kit. They didnt go into great detail about the setup or anything. If I remember correctly a while ago someone talked to them about sending out their suspension and having them make coilovers, the were quoted like 1200-1300$$. But they didnt say anything to me about this option. And at that price I would prefer to go with Ross's setup.

If I email A1 I doubt they will have any info to help with the install on the ZX. Like I said Im just not sure about what exactly it would take with the A1 setup. I also talked to someone on HybridZ that used Tockiko shocks and a set of EBay coilovers for a Civic to make his own. Someone else made them for a ZX his name is Yasin, he has website that I will post later when Im on my home computer.

Thanks
Rob

Here's Yasins pictrail page on the coil overs he did. Not sure on the details, but I'm sure you can find more info on Hybridz.org where he frequents the most.

EDIT:
Here's his walk through on hybridz.org:

I was thinking about grinding or cutting the rear perches off with a lathe and then using a slip on collar on the shock, or possibly a rear shock off a pickup truck. I saw some that looked to be the right length, but cant remember where now. Ive got some AFCO collars from a stock car laying around, and nooo time to try any of this out. AFCO also makes really affordable racing shocks that are about the right length, but the heims on both ends are 1/2", and the spud on the rear knuckle is about 3/4", so some fudging would have to go on, and a new upper mount would have to be made... I'm sure I'll get to it after the windshield and doors are back together.

SHADY280 01-24-2007 10:11 PM

when i talked to ross, he said the rear ones were custom and even he modded them to fit the zx's rear. the shocks he uses are killer expensive too. like 400 a set or something. those take the bulk of the cost, then he mods the bottom bushing and installs the coils. seems a bit excessive to me. why cant the coils just mount like the fronts and slip over the shock and rest on the stock perch. he said ever shock is differnt, i call bs and say it can be done that way. im considering looking into it. coils can be ordered in any length/rate that one desires. thats the only part really holding me back from making my own. if i had rates id figure a bolt to stock kit.

KTM200-280zxt 01-25-2007 03:16 PM

Hmm. I just started another job and will have some extra money coming in so Im thinking of just going with Ross's kit. Im just thinking that with his coilovers there is very little modification needed to make them work and they are probably a proven design. After reading about how much work it was for Yasin to make his, it is kind of tuning me off to the idea. But who knows.........

SHADY280 01-26-2007 07:08 AM

yeah i just dont got a grand to drop right now, 500 yes, tell ross about the site, tell him about matt armstrong, hopefully itll bring it down a tad, prolly not much tho

KTM200-280zxt 01-26-2007 09:26 AM

Ya, I would much rather spend $500 then $1k. And like I said I would like to go with whatever you decide. Im a little confused, who is Matt Armstrong? And what site should I talk to Ross about?

Thanks
Rob

SHADY280 01-26-2007 06:02 PM

i am matt armstrong, tell him aboot this site (zdriver), and you may get a price discount, or cheaper shipping, stuff like that. i get deals from him sometimes because i mention his names in threads like this.

KTM200-280zxt 01-27-2007 11:33 AM

Ohh.. sorry about that, I didnt know your name was Matt. When I had talked to him I told him that a member of Zdriver.com that lives in BC, Canada recomended that I look into his products. So what setup are you leaning towards right now?
