weight reduction?

hey what are some ways i can lower the weight on the car even though it is pretty low now but i was wondering if i could make it lighter and all .

Dorifto 12-24-2004 03:48 PM

Getting rid of EVERYTHING in the car - door panels, sound deadening, insulation, seats, spare tire, A/C, heater blower and ducting - should take care of some "excess weight". I did this to my Z, with the exception of the A/C and heater stuff, and the seats. But I'm just going to be putting new stuff back in ... https://www.zdriver.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

well i think i am gonna get some racing seats in cause mine arnt in quit the best condition and all and im gonna go as light as i can on those. so theres not really any hidden weight in the car is there?

Nope, the weight is all pretty obvious.

Dorifto is right on. If you want to keep your interior or want to go beyond his suggestions, you can go to figerglass panels and hood that are quite a bit lighter than the sheet metal used by the factory.

This will take more work and probably require a re-paint so it may not be cheap depending on how far you want to take it.

might be a safety issue but when i got my MSA kit i got rid of the old rusty 800 pounds bumpers...i figure if i get into an accident the car is gone with them on or off so it dont matter.

applemansapple 12-26-2004 06:09 PM

well if i get in a accident im just gonna buy a new car depending on the damage. so taking off the bumpers would take a poop load of weight off so that sounds good but does the car still look alright without them on

Skully 12-26-2004 06:48 PM

well unless you got the kit it would look ugly...like i said i got the MSA kit so it looks great.

I just took out my electric atenna and it was pretty heavy

I've seen a couple ZX's running around without bumpers - out back they look pretty nasty (not good), but up front, it's alright. An acquired taste, I guess you could say. You'd be amazed how much room there is back there for an intercooler ... :D

For the fiberglass panels, I remember seeing a post here a while back that had a link to a fiberglass parts page for the ZX. It included fenders, hoods, doorskins, doors themselves, rear hatches, and rear quarterpanels and skins for the 2-seater. If you do a search here for "fiberglass", it should appear.

Hope this helps,
-Dave
