Muffler

Howdy ya'll!
I am running MSA's Turbo exhaust system on my 1979 280zx. When I received all the piping and whatnot, I realized that the piping was a little bit over sized so I had to cut quite a bit to fit in my cat and I just completely dis-regarded the jagged tail pipe between the muffler and the tip because it was just way too big. I installed all the piping but that peice, so my exhaust currently exits the driver side and is just muffler+tip at the end. What I'm getting at is, the muffler(dynomax super turbo), after installation, hangs pretty damn low. Is it supposed to hang low, or should i twist the muffler so that it is horizontal rather than vertical? If I mount it horizontally i will have to modify some parts due to the fact that the muffler is quite big. My main problem is that my rear-end is shot, so there is no suspension really. So when I gun it my rear bumper is basically hitting the floor which inturn is eating up my muffler, I KNOW i need new struts and springs, but even with new suspension, will my muffler still hit the floor when i gun it? I don't know if yall are following me or not, but I would like to know if anybody has the same exhaust system and how I could mount it best without the whole suspension trip in mind. Any and all help is welcome, thank you.

P.S. Ill try to get a picture up as soon as possible!

I would try to turn the muffler so that it doesn't rub, I'll have to look under my car tomorrow to get a better idea of what you are dealing with (still learning the lay of the thing). And although I have not dealt with this specific exhaust setup, it has been my experience that mass produced exhausts are less than perfect. I have dealt with borla, pacesetter, and bosani and none of them fit really well without some modifications.

I had my Flowmaster installed horizontally. If you get good springs and struts, no your car will not sag very much at all in the rear. If your muffler hits, then even a good factory rear suspension will be better than what you got. Your shocks are gone!

You can run your exhaust like you have it now as long as you replace your suspension soon.

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch for the info. I was tempted to go at it with a wrench but since I can just upgrade my suspension and not have to worry about my muffler hitting the ground, then ill do that. Thanks a bunch, but while were at it, should i get a coilover, tokico springs and struts, or just factory replacement? Im looking for performance basically so im sure factory replacement is out of the question.

Get the Tokico springs and struts. That'll drop it just a tad and tighten everything up just perfect. I've heard not to get the Eibach springs... Suspension Techniques and Tokico are good.

:( I'm still running factory springs because of no money

hey bleach,
what have you heard about the eibach's?

i want to do the suspension soon and was thinking of using eibach's.

Bleach 10-30-2003 09:39 AM

...that they lower the car an inch as stated, but are too loose. They give a nice soft ride but don't have much on improving handling. Your car may still drop in back a bit. Not as bad as it does now though!

LIKE BLEACH SAYS.. GO WITH TOKICO'S THE SOFTER SPRINGS FROM EIBACH LOWERS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF YOUR STRUTS... THE SPRINGS ARE A LOT SOFTER AND ALLOWS FOR MORE BOUNCE....

Thanks again

Thanks for all the opinions and whatnot, I think I'll go with the tokico springs and struts. Ice's caps intimidated me quite well and im gonna go with his choice. Thanks again all.
