anyone have this??

taillight "update"

I've been tossing around the idea of buying this thing... anyone else put it on? What about relocating the licence plate?

Carl's Z Jun 2, 2005 11:06 AM

Seen it on an '83 once...no likey

Heat Rave R Jun 2, 2005 12:50 PM

You can juist relocate the license plate onto the lower bumper.

me no likey too.

I've got a cracked one on my turbo car.

jburge01 Jun 2, 2005 02:41 PM

My '83 turbo car came with one from the dealer. 1 problem, the key to open the hatch will no longer reach in far enough to open the hatch from the outside.

WildmaN Jun 2, 2005 02:45 PM

I no likey it either. It just doesn't look right! And that auction has been on there for quite a while!

I yoinked one of those panels off a car in a junkyard. I figured I could hang it up on my garage wall or something for decoration. ^^

That sounds like the best thing it would be good for, They look flat out like shit on the cars!

Skully Jun 2, 2005 07:34 PM

i like it looks nice go for it

Heat Rave R Jun 2, 2005 08:21 PM

It's certainly something uncommon on the 280ZX's, so if you want to go for uniqueness, go for it.

Skully Jun 2, 2005 09:10 PM

i would just get the bottom red strip not the orange to connect the lights inbetween..and i would get the one without stripes

jfairladyz Jun 2, 2005 09:47 PM

Did they make one without stripes to go with the earlier taillights? That probably wouldn't look so bad if it didn't have the stripes.

Heat Rave R Jun 2, 2005 10:54 PM

Yes, there are versions for both styles of taillights.

DynamicJ Jun 3, 2005 02:02 PM

i think i am going to get it... I've been thinking about it today. looks like it would be cool. if not, it comes right off.

jfairladyz Jun 3, 2005 04:14 PM

Hey, as long as you like it that's all that matters. It is after all your car. Good luck.

duckyz Jun 3, 2005 07:22 PM

To be honest, those are not "new" updates. Those things have been around for about as long as the ZX. I personally think it cheapens the look of our cars, but hey...if you like it....tear your ass!

280ZX_AV8R Jun 4, 2005 02:01 PM

Mine Came On My Car From The Dealership So I Can't Tell The Difference Because I Never Saw It Without The Update Kit. I Think They're A Good Addition

Ryan82ZX Jun 7, 2005 08:38 AM

Personally, I don't like the look at all, maybe if the lettering wasn't so big.

P.S. has anyone seen smoke taillight covers for these cars, I am painting my car black and I want the taillights match somewhat!

DynamicJ Jun 7, 2005 08:44 AM

i've not seen any covers... your best bet would be to buy some of the trillogy spray paint made for spraying tail lights and other assemblies. They look pretty good... someone on here has a set painted. Can't remember who though

lww Jun 7, 2005 09:53 AM

I've got one on mine and I like it.

These have been available since the early 80's when the ZX came out. I had one without stripes on my '80 280ZX.

Didn't have one on my '82 NA, cause I didn't want the weight.

I now have one on my '82 3.1 Turbo.

The license plate is mounted under the bumper though. Don't drill holes in your bumper with screws.

All you need is a piece of L bracket to bolt it to the underside of the bumper on the steel support. That will keep your bumper clean and un-molested.

If you look in my pic below, I've moved the front license plate under the bumper and offset to the drivers side as well so it won't block air flow to the intercooler.

It looks much better and gives it a little Euro flair.

DynamicJ Jun 7, 2005 10:22 AM

looks good lww, I don't have a front license plate so I am covered there... I plan on buying the MSA Aero Kit 2 soon... any Idea on where to put the plate then?

Aero Kit 2 doesn't really leave anywhere to mount a front plate...

It looks good because it blends the bumper in with the air dam.

If you have to have a front plate, I would go with the same mounting position. I believe the Aero Kit 2 still uses the same bumper cross member as the factory bumper, but I could be wrong. If it does, you'll just have to mount your L bracket through the Aero Kit into the steel cross member and then screw your license plate into the L bracket.
