**T-top LEAK DRIVER DOOR WINDOW LEAK***

Wat can i do? my driver seat gets wet the window leaks and the t-tops leak its a 81 280zx w/5spd turbo swap.

SpeciallySpiked 12-24-2008 02:33 PM

In what location along the t-top is it leaking? Is it where the t-top, window, and body meet?
It can be any number of things from the rubber not sealing correctly to the window and the t-top not lining up correctly.

If it is the rubber's fault, I suggest using Vaso-line to make a better seal.
If it is the window's fault, look into if the window is closing all the way/where exactly it is not fitting up correctly.

there are several ways to fix this but do you just want a link to replacemant seals? http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/SWR02E there you go

but i fixed alot of my leaks with RTV/silicone and rubber stick-on door spacers/seals

btw nice sounding car, like to see some pics, and welcome to ZDriver

Guys,

I am having the Z31 T top seals reproduced by Metro Moulded Parts, Inc., If there is Interest and some one is willing to donate a set of seals, I will gladly send them in as well for molds to be made.

I'm not familiar with Z cars (yet), but in my (torrid) past I came across rubber drain holes/lines in the vallys of the seal that were plugged with dirt and debries. The water welled up and had no where to go and simply overflowed the seal dam. If that's the case, find out where they drain out to and blow some compressed air backwards (from the drain outlet side). Don't put in so much pressure it inflates the hose and blows it off the nipple or worse- bursts the hose deep inside of the body. After the air comes out then wash the drain out and run some plastic wire down to help clear it out. If there isn't a drain then sorry for interrupting . ;-)

In my past car, I had a theory that the outter edge of the t-top itself was the problem. Water may be leaking into the handle part and the comming out near the corner of the t-top. This appears to be through the seal but may not be.

I never got around to fixing it before I sold that car.

I was going to disasemble the handle portion and then put some black silicone along all the inside edges while putting it back together. Then a small bead on top where the glass meets the metal.

vaseline helps for a while but they will start to leak again i've had this problem for several years now, I was told by the bodyshop the seals had shrunk and they needed to be replaced . I also adjusted the window and it helped for a while.

my trick was get the silicone and run a bead of it along the inside of the targa panel but not on the glass, where the panel contacts the rubber. hey presto no more leaks. but after about 6 moths it will squish down a bit but then just repeat. i did it both sides on both panels and i know when i get a few drips after a wash its time to do it again

Careful with petroleum jelly. That can seriously deteriorate (sp) the rubber material.

My 83 t tops also leak onto the drivers seat and now the passenger seat as well. Thought I had it fixed for awhile using silicon but apparently that dried out also. Need the weatherstriping to fit on the body. Repair shop said they are shrunk and need replacing.

NEED to find t-top seals for a 83 280ZX coupe.
Anyone know where to locate these seals? Please let me know before it rains again !!!!

^Try www.Blackdragonauto.com I believe their seals are pretty reasonably priced. I thought about getting those in the future for my '82 T-top.

Here you go.

Blackdragon has the RH side for a 2+2, I have a coupe.
But is a good price. lol.
Thanks for the effort.

Those seals are the little itty bitty cheap one that goes on the actual t-top. You need the other seal as well that goes up the window around the t-top and down the side. They run from $300-500 a side.... that would be worth reproducing if they were reasonably priced....

tennhogfan 03-03-2012 05:15 PM

FWIW If I open the doors before rolling up the windows it allows another 1/16" or so more travel allowing a better seal at the ttop.
For me the difference between a damp or dry seat.
