what to remove?
 

if i want to put a K&N cone filter on my 81 280zx what do i need to remove or just remove my air box and put the cone there or is there more to remove to make it better...

ok i got the answers already to that now whats the pipe i can put on the AFM 2" 3" ??? whats the standard size for a 1981 280zx??

If you've got the answers, would you PLEASE pm them to me? I've been looking for a K & M kit to do this with for months, or even an Autozone K & M look alike but can't figure out how to make it work.

Skully, if you want to do it cheaply, go to Home Depot or a similar store, and get a 90 degree bent pipe, 3"diameter. I used a 3 inch rubber 90 bend (it's mandrel too!) in the gardening section with all the different pipes. I tried PVC, but it didn't fit. The rubber one had a 4 inch flare at the ends to go onto the rubber boot to the AFM and to the K&N filter itself. Hardest part was to push the 4 inch flare thru that little opening to fit onto the rubber boot. It only cost 5 bucks or so, not a bad mod considering the filter was about 47 dollars.

kd5izq, sorry the only pic I have of that right now is the one in my rides profile. I know it sucks, it was taken with a disposable camera that I had used on a weekend trip. I will try to take better pictures and post them, but it might be a little while. What do you need help with? I will try to explain better if you want me to. The filter I bought was a 9" K&N with a 3" diameter hole, with a taper at the end to be able to put the tubing on it. If there is no taper, it will be pretty hard to keep that filter mounted. You'll have to remove the old filter box and the rod that used to support it, that black one. Be careful not to strip the screw!

Easiest way to get the rubber bend in, I removed the boot to the AFM (this is on an 82ZXT by the way it could be different for n/a's), and pushed the rubber bend in first part of the way and then put the rubber boot to the AFM back on. I used stainless steel hose clamps and attached the filter and there you go, instant high flow intake for about 50 USD!

Also, if you have that head light washer system, it will be loads easier if you remove it to do this. Would be a good time to put in the H4 headlight upgrades too.

kd5izq, the filter part # I used was either RE-0930 or RE-0810. It was one or the other. I think the 0930 was a 6" filter and the 0810 was a 9 inch filter. Either will do fine. Come to think of, I think maybe I did get the 6" since 9" was too long for good support from the pipe. Plus it blocked a lot of the radiator too. The pipe, I'll check that out this weekend and let you know what pipe I got from Home Depot.

Your car doesn't have T-tops, but you have the aluminum wheels that come with the T-top option so your car already has one mod!

I like your garage. It looks very nice and organized... oh, and the Z is in great shape too! Those wheels are also one of the lightest Z wheels, so you should hang onto them for weight savings.

[img]/w3timages/icons/cool.gif[/img] I wish I could take credit for the garage, but in actuality it's my Father-In-Law's woodshop, but it makes a great place to do the big jobs on the Z (heh,like the clutch I was changing in the pictures). Thanks for telling me about the rims, I wasn't aware of that, but am glad to know. As far as hanging on to them, it's funny you should say that, those are the rims I would have died to have back in High School on my '80 2+2 instead of the Iron Cross' that I had [img]/w3timages/icons/crazy.gif[/img]. So no way would I let those go, well, for the most part no way, I just wish I knew of a way to get the corrosion the rest of the way off of them so I could re-clear coat them [img]/w3timages/icons/frown.gif[/img].
