yeah, I like the earlier ones better, but if you want no rust you would probably be better off getting a later model

For a first car, I would say fuel injection would be nice to have.

I suggest the 280Z model. 1975-78
But the 280ZX would be good too. 1979-83

The 280zx has optional T-tops from 1980-83 if you like that kind of thing. Also, avoid getting a Z with an automatic transmission. Those are a little more boring, and also harder to sell.

You know what? If you're REALLY into the whole Z thing, get one that fits you. A car that says, "Drive me, love me, take care of me.....and I'll take care of you." Trust me...These cars will talk to you. You've just gotta listen.......

I'm a proud owner of two Z's : a 1983 280ZX and a 1984 50th Anniversary Edition 300ZX turbo. I love 'em both!

Climate

You should take into account where you live as far as the rust thing, if you live in southern california then rust isn't as much of a concern if you live in miami. If you live in a dry climate and find a car that hasn't travled much get it. It sounds like your gonna have a tight budget which means whatever car you do get will have problems. lol
I'm 16 and got my 240z a year ago for 1500, it has problems but nothing major considering its 29 years old. The guy I got it from quoted me at 1400-1500 because he thought the head gasket was bad cause he was losing coolant, then the day before I got it he found the coolant leak in a little hose and I got an straight, great running 240z with 160Kmiles for 1500. Just save your money and when the right car comes along things will just happen.
