What does a good exhaust note sound like?
Hello,
What sort of exhaust note is considered a good sound?
AllmyZs,
I've heard you mentioning your pet setup in some older threads(K&N, 2.5", no-cat, flowmaster, miniturbo tip) Is it possible for you to record your exhaust sound so we can hear it?
Thanks

that set up sounds good.... i just have k&ns on right now and plan to do the rest, but just with the k&ns the intake sounds GREAT.... opening the exhaust up will sound awesome as well... i have a clip of a drive-by with someone on classiczcars.com that has twice pipes... i'd upload it but dial-up is a pain.

actually I have an old setup that I plan on replacing the current setup is a 6-3-1 header from msa, 2.5 in. pipe, and some crappy bent muffler and a 4 in. tailpipe that points straight out. it is pretty loud at 3000 rpm but it sounds awesome at idle, then the backpressure and backfiring sounds sweeeeeet while at the same time pissing off all the enviromentalists with a big cloud of smoke and tire. hahahahahahahahaha yeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaawwww
or you could just drive slow.

Has anyone ran or is currently running a Supertrap exhaust? My brother has a 74 260Z and wants to go ahead and put a header new pipe and a Supertrap muffler. I would like to know if this gives off a good deep sound or is it raspy and corse? Some people like the loud poping noise which is fine, however we are looking for that deep rumble sound Any feedback would be appreciated.

having grown up in Z-cars (240, 260, 280, 280ZX, 280ZXT, and 86300ZX) i have to say that the inline six OHC has probably the prettiest engine sound outside of a v-12. its nice to be able to feel the mustangs and vipers going by rumbling your feet, and chevy V-8s sure sound purdy, but the trumpet blare of an L-series engine is sheer music to my ears. B-B-B-B-B-BRRRRRRRRAPPP! (then into second gear, etc. :- )

I found a sound link on Sport Z Magazine (Fall 2001)
http://www.angelfire.com/nb/2datsunz...xenasound.html
The sound came from a non-turbo 280ZX

Give a low rumble at idle and sounds like a V8 . When you get on it , it sounds fairly lowd but wont set off car alarms . Most of the time. LOL 2 1/2'' sound good also but you loose low end power and torque. With out a up grade of a cam the headers and larger exhaust is a waist of money if you are doing it for power . Better spend on a diff of lower ratio like a .390 . This will make a great difference.

I have a 2.5" with high flow cat and Dynomax muffler and I think it sounds awesome. No offense to the guy that owns that 280 from the sound clip but that car sounded kinda crappy. I think mine sounds a lot better, it has more of a deep rumble then that raspy sound.

I like the way that my Z sounds, and it's probably got the cheapest exhaust setup on it that you could get. It has the stock exhaust on it, but my dad took the baffles out of it (if it had any, I know it doesn't have any now), cut off the catalytic converter, so it's just straight pipe off of the block into a melted out glasspack (I believe it's a cherry bomb muffler). My dad melted it down by pouring oil inside of it, letting it slosh around so it coats all of the fiberglass inside of the muffler, and then let it sit overnight so that the excess oil was drained out. He then took a welding torch and heated the muffler up, so as to get the oil to heat up and melt the fiberglass, then welded it onto the exhaust. So in the end, all you have is a tin can for a muffler. It's loud, but it's distinct. I haven't heard another car around my area that sounds the way that my datsun does. It kind of has that nice Z sound that all Z's have, but yet it's got a loud roar when you jump on the gas. The best thing about it is that you can set car alarms off if someone pisses you off and their car has an alarm on it.

I have a good quality sound clip from my car.
I've got an L28 NA, headers to a 2.5", normal cat, and a Flowmaster at the back. The flowmaster is chambered, not straight through so it doesn't sound quite as deep at higher rpms.

I like driving to the mall and parking in the parking garage, the exhaust on the Z will pretty much set off any car alarm on the level of the garage I am on. It's awesome to see how pissed off people get...
