What are benefits of a lowered Z?

Why do so many people lower their z-cars?

I've seen discussion about redrilling control arm mountings and spacers to keep steering linkage horizontal. Amazing lengths and $$ to lower an inch. My Z already scrapes on every speed bump I encounter.

I see that manufacturers only offer springs that lower, if they support Z at all.

With all this effort there must be big benefits that air dams and side skirts do not solve.

I have a 78 280z 2+2 (daily driver) that I'm working on and a 78 280z coupe in storage. I'm putting Energy Suspension bushings and strut cartridges on it this month.

People lower Z cars to have a lower center of gravity. If it's properly lowered, it won't lose much suspension travel and steering rack can be retained with proper offset so bumpsteer is eliminated. You must ride over some tall speedbumps, because my lowered Z doesn't hit anything - and I have to worry a lot since my 280z radiator hangs below the engine crossmember!

mines got about a 3/4inch drop on it, and it HUGS the road hard. ofcourse i've got stiff springs in the front and rear, once i get a few of the kinks worked out of it (And the weather improves) she's gonna see some auto-x style racing.

but yeah, around corners, the 3/4inch drop can really be noticed, there is almost no drift in the front wheels. the aerodynamics are greatly improved.
