timing probs

can somebody give me the exact procedures for setting the timing on a 72 240z, L24. i have really screwed it up when i replaced the head gasket, really appreciate the help, thanks

all i do is adjust the timing until it starts pinging and then nock it back a couple of millimeters until it stops pinging

I'm guessing that when you replaced the head gasket that you dropped and replaced the timing chain?
So that is probably your problem. either you didnt' get the marks lined up on the chain and the sprocket or you just got the oil pump set in one tooth off.
If you have a timing light, how far off is your igntion timing? Or does it even run?
