tachometer/overcharging problem

hey guys, my car has had an overcharging problem for about as long as I've owned the car. I didn't know what it was, but now I have an idea. I went out to my car to drive to work, and I turned the key to the on position (I hadn't started the car) and I noticed that my tachometer started to rise, but the car was not running. I turned the car off, and turned it back to the on position (did not start it) and the tach did the same thing. I then started the car, and although the idle was set low, the tach said the car was idling at 2000 rpms, when in reality it was at 900 rpms. I spoke to my friend, and he said that the wires running from the tach to the coil (or whatever on the engine it connects to) are probably loose. if anyone could tell me how to find the wires, and tighten/replace them, I'd appreciate it.

if it's a 73/74, that's a common problem. replace with earlier model tach, or take out tach and find the shorted resistor and replace it.

um...it's a 72...

maybe you got an oddball tach, but that was the problem with mine. eventually as the car got really warm, i'd be cruising at an indicated 5k rpm.
