Starting Problems

My 81-Z will start some days and then some days it won't. I had it checked out, they replaced the temp. sensor, the oxygen sensor, put new hoses on check the computer but it still hasn't fix the problem. I've been told to check the fusal links, can any one point me in the right direction? Again the car will start and run for a week and then on any given day I'll will go out and it just turns over as if it's not getting any gas. Leave it for a few days come back and it cranks. Then the process starts all over again in a week or so.

Re: Starting Problems

Well, when it does this, pull off the valve cover vent hose connection. It plugs in right in front of your throttle body. Spray in some starter fluid while keeping the throttle opened by pushing down the linkage with your other hand. Then, quickly get in the car and crank it. If you suddenly get some spurratic firing in a cylinder or two, then you know for sure that it is a fuel problem. (have the starting fluid readily available)

If nothing fires, then possibly it is related to the spark. You can replace your coil just to see if it is that. There is also a possibility that the starting fluid doesn't reach the engine in large enough amounts to fire. I haven't done this test myself yet, but that stuff burns very easily so the test should work.
