Rusty Gas tank

So I finally found a 75-76 gas tank to swap for the Z, the problem is it's rusty on the inside and the rust needs to go before I pop it in. I called a few shops since I know just flushing it won't do the job and they all quoted me 200-300 dollars. Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this out myself? I got the tank for free, so wasting a little bit of money isn't that bad. I just don't want to spend 200+ on one when I can just get a fuel cell.

Thanks in advance.

why not get a fuel cell?

A good repair (and) for cheap... That ol' saying comes to mind... Can't have your cake and eat it too. :109:

lol, I just need to know what chemicals to use. I'll do it myself. If not I'll just find another gas tank, I know of one other in the area.

I've tried just about everything. A radiator shop did it for $100 and it was like brand new. All that do it yourself stuff just makes a toxic mess.

NismoPick May 28, 2008 12:40 PM

^^^ Indeed... $100 is well worth the cost compared to hours of breathing fumes, chemicals covering your skin, and figuring out how to dispose of all the goop (down the gutter usually equals a huge $$$fine$$$).

I have done several motorcycle tanks with POR-15. I recomend that if you want to coat it in the future to rpevent future rust. POR-15 will not gum anything up, and will not flake or come off no matter what you do. Otherwise, if you just want to get it clean, take it to a radiator shop.

Or, if you want to do it yourself.

Pick up a couple gallons of muratic acid, and 5 pounds of bb's and have a blast. it can be done. But, it's a pain in the ass.

yeah there is a fuel tank cleaning kit that uses por-15 i believe and its not that hard just tyme consuming. Call around to radiator shops they use the same process to clan raditors as tanks. Might be a wee bit cheeper that way.

A friend of mine half filled his with pea gravel and used anti freeze then strapped it to his cement mixer for 4 hours. It worked but it took another hour to get the gravel out.

Rusty Gas Tank

I used the POR- 15 kit also and it worked great. It was a 3 step process and was pretty simple to use. It came with just enough of the 3 chemicles and sealant to do your tank. I think it cost me $75. You can get it on line at several places. Here's 1.
