Replaced 240Z alternator with 280ZX alternator

Replaced 240Z alternator with 280ZX alternator
I swapped out the alternator in my 1972 240Z with a 60A alternator from a 280ZX.
After I installed it and was putting away my tools, I noticed I had left out this part:

Then I broke the wire off while trying to install it.

Does anybody know what this thing even is? The car seems to run just fine without it.
