Questions about a 240Z with a V8

ok, my friend likes my Z, and he wants to get one for himself. One of the guys around here has a 72 240Z, with a chevy V8 under the hood, and the car is going for 5000 obo. I called the guy to see what condition the car was in, and he gave me this long story. To make it short, it's a Z with a Chevy v8 from a 67 monte carlo (I believe it was a 67), a camaro Z28 5 spd. tranny, an r200 differential, Arizona shocks all around. Under the hood it is running edelbrock carburetors, and some other stuff I can't remember. He said that the headers on the car were really hot, and they fried the starter, so he replaced it and heat wrapped the headers to cut down on heat. He said he put an aluminum radiator in it and it ran at a steady 140 degrees no matter what. The body, he said, needed some work, such as the roof is rusted, and there is a moon roof installed, the hood needs to be replaced (he said he had one that he bought for it), a paint job, and some other body work. The interior, he said, was clean. Is this car even worth going to look at and test drive, or do we have a great car at our disposal?

Airpilot, I would suggest going to HybridZ.org for all questions and advice about Z V8 conversions. Several of the members there have been involved in this type of conversion for years, and their cars range from mild street machines to vehicles that regularly humiliate the competition at racetracks around the country. There is an unbeleivable wealth of information available at that site covering every aspect of Z V8 conversions, for instance:

One of the primary things to know about any V8 conversion is whether or not it is done to "Scarab" or "JTR" standards - full descriptions of the differences are available at HybridZ.

Hope that helps.

V-8 power and a rusty car for $5,000? I wouldn't waste my time. If it was rust-free it would be worth looking at but it sounds like a car with a lot of problems to me.
