Ok, I have to pay 100 bucks for a new key ignition thing. (not the switch, but the key part of the switch). I thought, instead of paying 100 bucks for that, why not go to radio shack and get some switches and a button and make it a button start car.

So i get the highest ampere rated switches and buttons, and then look at the wires for the ignition.... and now i'm confused, and my haynes manual doesnt help out much.

can anyone tell me what wires go to what... and what amperage rating should i get--they look pretty thick and i was thinking that my 10amp switches could handle it... but i want to make sure before i blow myself up.

also, I bought 2 rocker switches, and one momentary push button. would those be able to complete it as i have planned: one rocker switch turns the car to Acc., then the second one (which is now illuminated) turns the car into the "On" position, and the button engages the starter.

take the ignition off of the steering column so you can turn the wheel w/o the key, then take the 2 screws off the back of the switch to seperate the key part from the electric part---then you can use the electric part w/ a screwdriver (or any key) to start the car... simply unplug it and hide it, or take it w/ you for security...

i did this w/ my 280z convertible until i could afford an ignition switch

If you want to go the easy route check out the push button start kits that are advertised in some of the hotrod magazines.

 

sorry i wasnt that descriptive--

i have the ignition switch already off the key part. the key is borken off and stuck int eh on position (so the wheel is always unlocked). now i have already stripped the wires from the plug (doh--i have a feeling that will haunt me), and have rigged the first switch (to get it to ACC.) to work. the second switch (which will eventually light up when the first one is closed), just needs some more wire and ill have that hooked up to get the car into the "ON" position. The only problem is, i have touched the ignition wire, I'm scared that my little 3 Amp pushbutton wont be able to take it.

It says on the package that its 3 amps @ 120V DC. well my little pushbutton has relativaly small contacts, so would it be able to take that thick ignition wire?

 

Get a 30A relay for the ignition & switch that instead, same for your start circuit. You might want a hidden isolator to add a little security to the setup though. I plan on doing a similar setup on my car, but will use the original key switch to feed my relay coils
