power steering

I did some research and all I could find was that you could use power steering components from a mustang (forgot which year). Are there any other options? I want power steering, but don't want too complicated of a swap. the mustang swap includes quite a bit of work and stuff.

A few years ago I used to align semi-trucks. Try taking your car to a good alignment shop and tell them what you want.

I had a driver come in to my shop and the ugly old freight shaker was so hard to turn you darn near need 2 people to steer at low speeds. I lightened up the steering and you could "Almost" turn the wheel with your finger.

Now I realize that a Z and a Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner etc. are different animals, but it might work and save you a ton of time and cash.

Just a thought... Alignment techs. can work wonders when they want to or have the skills. Luckly I was trained by the manufactuer and knew my stuff.

what did you do to lighten up the steering? Are these possible DIY type jobs for a somewhat mechanically competent guy with very competent friends?

No, I'm sorry to say. We had Bee-Line equipment set up to bend axles to get proper caster and camber. I do not know if the car can be adjusted with shims. An alignment tech. should be able to give you an answer. We also had computers set up to moniter the adjustments as we made them. All done with lasers. Sorry I couldn't help more.

try putting more air in your tires, if your pressure is low it is really hard to turn. when I first drove my z around the nehiborhood w/ the old cracked tires that I did not want to put too much air into them, when I put the new tires on at 36 psi. it drove like a dream

No Power Steering, its a drag..

I agree with all those above, power steering should not be needed on a car that weighs little more than 200 pounds...

make sure the tires are good sized, and well inflated.. i try to keep about 36# all around. get it aligned, it shouldn't be too expensive, and try it out. If all else fails, drive it around for a few months. By that time, you will be used to driving it.
