Performance CAM Help

Has anyone ever roached a performance cam? I just tore up a new crane cam...used stock lash pads. The rockers are gouged on the pivot side, half of the lobes are tore up. I have a new Snyder cam...dont want to do this again. Any input is appreciated. I know it has to do with lash pad choice, but am finding it hard to picture why.

Re: Performance CAM Help

Initially, i don't believe that stock lash pads are able to withstand the additional stress of the increased lift and duration on a hi performance cam. Whenever you pop in a new cam, its a great idea to make sure that you are using brand new lash pads for security purposes on a cam like that-plus most places will offer a set of lash pads for your cam. I use Isky cams and if you buy their cam with a lash pad set from them, they will give you up to a year warranty in the event of lobe failure. In some more rare circumstances, some cam's have faulty or "soft" lobes which defect under use. On my last engine, the exhaust lobe on cylinder #6 wore down about a 1/4 of an inch. I had the valve spring checked just to make sure it wasn't faulty and applying too much pressure on the lobe(it wasn't) so it was a faulty cam. Also, sometimes, pretty rarely, springs that can't handle the extra lift and duration with allow valve float which will cause the the lobes to smack the lash pads and wear. All in all, go with new pads, springs that have been checked, and warm/cold clearances that are accurate and you should be fine.-taylor

Check out the performance cam that Clifford Performance make for nissans. www.cliffordperformance.com. They have been around probably as long as crane maybe longer. The best thing about them is that they specialize in engine performance parts for six cylinder motors. I plan on putting one in my car when it time for a rebuild.
