Oil Pump Drive Spindle Trouble!!!!
 

Major frustration with 280ZX turbo L28. I can't seem to get the spindle back into place in the front cover. Stops about 3/4 of an inch from home. It won't rotate into place as though the small gear won't engage the drive gear. I can't imagine what could be stopping it. It practically fell out when I took it apart for a head gasket replacement. Never had this problem before. It always would glide back into place. Tried tapping it in gently with a brass punch and still no go. Feels like it is stopping solid against something. I would hate to have to pull the front cover off again. Yes, the distributor is off. Tried to guide the distributor drive end with pliers, no go.

Anyone ever have this problem? Your comments will be greatly appreciated.
