OIl Pressure
My 280 oil pressure gauge I feel is going. It reads anywhere from 60-0. It usaully drops on accerleration then picks back up. I have also noticed it drops to zero for no reason at all. All the other gauges are reading perfect. Water temp 180-190. The motor sounds fine. So I am guessing oil gauge. does that sound about right?

Re: OIl Pressure
It's almost always the oil pressure sending unit that has gone bad when this happens. The unit is mounted on the engine just forward of the oil filter. A new unit costs about $30, and should fix the gauge problem.

Re: OIl Pressure
I second that! That is a very common problem with the 79-83 280ZX. Mine did the same thing and it was the oil pressure sending unit on the right side of the engine. Mine cost me $49 from a Nissan dealer, but it fixed the problem.
I was advised not to buy any aftermarket units for less because they may not read as accurate.... :-P http://www.zipcon.net/bleach/pages/zcar/zlogo.jpg |
Re: OIl Pressure
I think it's a common problem for all years. When I replaced mine ('71 240), Kyle from StrictlyZ recommended the Roadster unit as it reads more accurately than the Z unit.

Re: OIl Pressure
if you cannot be stuffed spending the $30 or so bucks, or need to wait a week or 2 before buying./..
just get a steel brush, and clean the connection points of where it connects to the wires, and see how that helps, i did that, and i can now sometimes read what pressure i got, just at idle and all that it drops to below 0... hehe 76 260z The NiteRider |
Re: OIl Pressure
Will the sending unit out of a 79ZX work in a 78Z?
