My new 240Z project...

Hey guys well i jsut got an account on this page . bu whatever down to busness. I'm in the progress of getting a 71 240Z. Ok this is what i have in mind.

- 82-83 280ZX F54 engine (either N/a or Turbo)
- P90 Head from a 81 -83 280ZX
- 240Z Hitachi SU Carburators (69-73) Z's


Well ok thats what i have in mind due to my questions. as follow ..

1) What Tranny would be best for this car and engine. Taking in consideration if the tranny would bolt on good to the 71 240Z ..... " I had the BW T-5 in mind before i found out abou the driveshaft issue..... NOT GOOD... So what other tranny would be good for Drag/ Highway driving?

2)Diferential. I read that there are many controversies about the differential choices. And i also heard (true or not) that there was a 280Z or ZX with a limited slip that was produced. " Tru or Fal... i'd like to know" Well long story short What year and from what car is the best desired one for my project

3) If i put the F54 from the ZX into the 71 240Z... Would i need to change the wireharness, computer, fuelpump ETC. or what would i need to change.. that's been bothering my mind.

4) MOST IMPORTANTLY.... Can i even do that modification easly. form a 82-83 F54 engine to a carburated running one like the 2.4's?

Well yah i kno alot of questions. its not that i dont know.. its that i whant to make shure '' better be safe than sorry. " Well thanks alot guys.

1) best tranny/diff in my opion is the close ratio 5 speed and R200 3.9 diff found in the '82 zx 2+2. You can go to zhome.com to ind the right one. You can tell by the speedo gear, it's black.
2) posi in a Z is a waste of money. Every Z I ever drove would lite both rear tires.
3)If you're going to use carbs, you don't need the ECU. The alternator is different so use your '71. You should get an electic fuel pump and wire it safely.
4)Everthing bolts up. You will need the mustache bar and other brackets from a '78. You should replace all the rear bushings with polyurethane ones. This step is probably the hardest part of the whole job.

Sounds like you want to runs carbs, not fuel injection or turbos... so... based on that I'll anwer your questions.

1) yes, don't bother with the T5 for your setup. 1981-83 280ZX non-turbo has the good 5-speed transmission you want.

2) 1987-89 300ZX Turbo (the only R200 LSD) very hard to find these days. 3.7 is the gear ratio. I would say to grab the open R200 3.9 gear ratio (lower) from the 1981-83 280ZX NA. Same car you get your transmission and engine from!

3) Leave your 240Z fuel pump. You can bolt up your dual SU manifold to the P79 head. Use the F54 280ZX exhaust manifold. Do not put a turbo head/block into your car and run carbs on it. The turbo engie has lower static compression made to accept boost.

4) yes, its been done a thousand times before. You can also swap in the 2.8L F54 and run the ZX fuel injection setup without a whole lot of trouble. That's been done.

FYI: 1981-83 have the F54 engine that you seek. (not just 82-83) Always check the head and block stamped code before you buy it. Many 280ZX's have had engine swaps in their history... double check things.

cool so far so good ok so the setup NOW that i have according ot ur advice for a STRONG running 240Z is as follows:
Tranny: 5 speed from a 81-83 zx
Fuel pump. keep the 240Z or get the Zx one.
Differential.: 81-83 Zx
head: P90 that comes with the F54
And i can swap in the carburated in no problems right?...

Well ok would i need to make any mods or changes in the car or engine under hood setup if i whanted the carburatos intstead of the injection.? aaaand lasQ just to make shure.

By swaping from an 71 l24 to a 83 l28.... would'nt i need to schange the harness and the computer? ... o no?
