Mufflers

I am wondering why the 280ZX exhaust on either side of the car. My 1980 exhaust on the back end of the passanger side. I have noticed that others exit on the drivers rear. My 280 goes back the drvers side, then makes a 90 degree turn after passing the muffler and then making another 90 to exit the passanger side. I would like to change that but the rear bumper is notched on the passager side. Has anyone else noticed this? Why did they port from either side. Thanks in advance, Andy

Re: Mufflers

Hi Andy--------actually it is a very simple answer--------------in the US the DOT mandates for each car where the exhaust output shall go--------Most of the time this exit is on the passenger side of the vehicle---------exceptions to the rule are vehicles with dual exhaust and sport/modified vehicles---------Since we are talking about the ZX---------I shall elaborate---------all of the ZX series cars from 79-83 exit on the passenger side only when they have a normally asperated engine---------the only ZX series cars that exit on the left or driver's side are the turbo series car--------this is due to performance(basically turbos rely on flow in to the engine and out of the engine------and flow with exhaust systems is the closest to a straight line concept)----------I hope i helped you with the ZX-Muffler trivia---------Oh yeah by the way mine is a 81 TURBO so the exhaust is on the driver's side-------in my opinion it looks better on that side too.....
