loose shifter
 

hey my shifter is loose in my 74. looks like i can:
take out the center console or crawl under the car

wich is easiest to do im guessing its just a loose nut

Try just taking out the center console. Underneith can get messy and plus its just easier to take it out cuz its easy to put back together :)

I believe I have the simple fix answer for you. In the shifters they have bushings. Over the years of wear and tear these bushings tend to wear out and disappear.

Now you can take off your center console and the shifter boot. From there you will be able to access your shifter, and its held together by a pin. Be REAL careful not to loose the pin and especially the clip! Its not a clip you can get anywhere. Its small too and I have lost it before;)

Anyways if you see no bushings on the shifter holes, like on mine you need to add 2 plastic bushings and put it back in and walla no more play or slop;) Best 2 dollar fix I've ever done.

well just fyi, if u pop out ur choke toggle baseplate u can get at the last screw and take apart shifter plate without taking out console, very nice. (whats the damn choke toggle for anyhow?? i use my slide one next to my seat, i tried this one once and it made some whirring noise). are u talking a bushing for inside the shifter handle to ride on the rod, or ones for each side of the shifter for side to side slop? cuz i dont find any at all.
also i was thinking a stainless steel or aluminum ferrari type shifter plate instead of a boot would be very slick, anyone ever seen this done or have a template?

DID THIS SAME POST ABOUT A MONTH AGO.
TOOK OFF CENTRE CONSOLE BOOT ETC THEN REMOVED PIVOT PIN VIA A C CLIP. PLASTIC BUSHES WERE HISTORY FROM WEAR. CUT A FELT PEN BARRELL TO SUIT AND SLOTTED IT IN.
WORKED WELL. STILL GOING 6 MONTHS LATER WITH NO HASSLES.

I went to the dealer and bought the bushings (about $4) just to see what they looked like.I then took them to my local Lowes Hardware store(they carry the largest selection of nuts & bolts,etc.) to see what kind of alternative i could come up with.The answer was a straight nylon bushing 1" long X 1/2" o.d.X 0.385"i.d.& 3/8"nylon washers.the bushings come 2 to a pack & the washers 4 to a pack,total cost about $1.35.this give you the parts to do 2 shifters.go ahead and pull your console.you're probably going to find that your inner shift boot will need replacing.remove it and you're right there to fix the bushings.CAREFULLY,remove the circlip & pin & the shifter lifts right out.Now push the new bushing through the pin hole on the shifter on a bench vise.it is a less than 0 tolerance fit,but will push right through.the bushing is longer than the hole,so stop when it hits the vise on the other side.Now trim off the excess bushing with a razor blade.Check the pin fit.You'll probably need to push the pin through on the vise & use some pliers to work it around in the hole untill you can push it through by hand.Now put it all back together.If the washers are too thick to fit in the spaces on either side of the shifter,you can thin them down with some sandpaper.Use white lithium grease to lube all of these parts.
This seems like a lot to do to save $3,but it looked to me like a much more durable set up than the nissan bushings.
