idiot lights on
my 79 280zx's idiot lights (door, brake and fuel) stay on....thought it was the alternator....it checks OK....but does not charge.....any help or free advice will be appreciated.

you probably have either a bad ground, or the wire going to from the alternator has corroded or is loose i had the same problem, it turned out that the wire was grounding out on the alternator casing, so i put a rubber washer there and i haven't had a problem since.

I haven't had any problems with my idiot light on my 83 280zx, but I did have problems with my alternator. Tested it with a voltmeter, 0 volts. Had 2 different shops test with their machines...checked OK. Finally someone else told me it was the indicator light in the dash. If it is burned out, the whole charging system shuts down!? Who would've thunk it? Oh well, this might help one problem.

You might check your lamps test relay coil. Its the one that turns on all the idiot lights when you first turn the key on. It failed on my '77 causing a similar problem. On a Z its installed under the right seat I'm not sure were it is on a ZX though.

prolly same on zx when i took out my seats there was buncha relays under there.......
