I saw this cruddy 280zx today
it was black primer painted, had a tranny cooler where the bodykit was cut to fit it where the front bumper was supposed to be and an airfilter pocking out real ugly like,no bumpers, interior shredded, dash almost non-exiestent, different wheels front and back( 4 spoke out back and 8 spoke in the front). too far gone to restore unfortunately unless you would want to replace everything( build a new car) hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahaha
calm down now
Zs are sooooooo much cooler than those ZXs

240Z was light, quick and clean. 260Z and 280Z are a little uglier (bumpers) but still Z cars and still great looking. ZX is very 80's and a perfect example of where NOT to use chrome and black plastic.
Maybe I'm biased..... just not a ZX fan.

Where did all this hate come from?
From the factory, the 260Z was the weakest and slowest Z ever made. The last couple years of the 280ZX had the most powerful inline six (normally aspired) of all the L28s. And in your pictures of your car, it looks like you've got mold growing on it. At least clean your car before you start making fun of someone's primered Z. Also, the 280Z is heavier than the '79 280ZX. It wasn't untill all the A/C, power steering, and electric windows came in that made it a little heavier.

Back in the seventies, the American market was interested in larger more comfortable vehicles. Nissan's answer with the ZX was to fill the desire for a "sporty" yet comfortable lounger. The ZX was a touring car, with lots of toys for that time, and you could drive one all day without getting tired.

Comparing weights of LAST generation S30 than the NEWEST ZX series car of the time is stupid. The 280Z had 170hp in 1978. What does the '79 have? Oh yea, something like 140? Which is faster? The 280Z? Oh yea. Shouldn't the ZX be an improvment?
So the 240Z and 280Z are both faster than the ZX (non turbo). The 260 is when the carbs are replaced with round tops. The 280Z was heavier because the car didn't go through any major engineering changes. Addons were put in place to meet new standards.
And about my car. No it doesn't have MOLD growing on it. Thats how it was when I bought it WHERE I bought it. I was waiting for the tow truck to come. (needed new rocker arm and cam because of the half *** attempt to fix it by the previous owner.) My car is a rustless '71 S30. More sought after, FASTER than the "awesome" ZX, lighter, and more powerful.
The 280ZX has not aged well. Its hideous. Tacky black plastic and rubber and random chrome bits.. Not to mention the cheap looking huge tail lights with no trim around them and the fact that most you see aren't even 2 seaters!!!! Its far from what the original 240Z was, and its not a real Z in my eyes.
But thanks for the L28 and 5 speed. Can't complain there. Nissan would have done it earlier if they could have. Oh yea, they did. '79ZX has the same motor the 280Z had.
Z is a sports car. 280ZX is an overweight, underpowered ugly just-another-80s-car that prostituted the original Zs image and is quite a let down in comparison.

Yup, "something" like 140... Do you know what NET horsepower is? Just because your moldy 2-seater lacks side impact (and front and rear) protection and any technology whatsoever doesn't make it a true sports car. By that measure no car since the 70's is a true sports car. The 280ZX made a design move in the direction that the public wanted and no manufacture has gone back since. ...and whats with wanting trim around tail lights? Are you even 16 yet? Sounds like you are a product of the 80's. Rubber trim on a 280zx is a lot better looking than those stupid bumper overriders and plastic wheel covers.

Nissan didn't even attempt to advertise the 280ZX as a sports car. No manufacturer has gone back since? The 350Z is a two seater with good performance and looks. Its a sports car.
As for the wanting trim around the tail lights.... it just shows how cheap and tacky the 280ZXs were. Just stick a chunk of plastic here and make em light up.
I'm 17 and still don't understand what my age has to do with facts. But that makes you cool for sure!
And I disagree with your last statement as do many other people, which is why a 280ZX is worth **** compared to a 240Z in the same condition.
Don't take it so personal - I just hate 280ZXs.
BTW, if you don't like S30s, why don't you get rid of your "'70 Fairlady Z L20"?
I'd be glad to take your "moldy 2-seater (that) lacks side impact (and front and rear) protection and any technology whatsoever.. (and isn't)..a true sports car" off your hands.

Putting down another person's Z is not only in poor taste, but also a waste of time.
This web site could be the best for information and help, if not for the chatter that does no go for anyone.
This particular link sounds like a bunch of children.

if you are talking about my z having mold...paint is being stripped off and being replaced w/ primer until I can afford a new p8nt job. 260...slow...not mine 240 carbs, racing cam, other internal engine stuff that the previous owner is looking for the papers for, the shocks are shot though,

My point was more that people could jerry-rig a car as bad as this zx was, when fixed up the zx could make a good car. But most zx's that I see now are wrecked, rusted,or just bad. There are only about 2 zx's in my city that I have seen that are actually worth owning. There are about 20-25 zx's that are just sitting in people's driveways dead as a doornail. My z is the ONLY first-gen z I have ever seen sitting in my county but is now living strong. If you want a zx then I could hook you up with the owner for a small fee ~$20. I only hate that Nissan went from making the first-gen z that had thicker body panels and strong chassis to making the lighter weight zx that had weak body panels and a bad chassis with a more powerful engine. Nissan went from making cars that lasted to the "disposable" 5-year-life zx cars.
That was my point.
Sorry for the confusion.
I would have responded earlier but my internet was down for a long time.

hmmmm. well, looks like i joined the conversation too late. anywho, a zed is a zed is a zed, whether it's a 240z, 280zx, 350z or whatever. the zx is meant as a touring car, the z is a sports car. my 3 cents

I used to hate the ZX as well, and I used to think they were overweight pigs, but then I purchased one when I was 17 (im now 24) and even tho its not in the best of shape, Ive kept it the longest of any car Ive owned. they are not a true "sports car" but they are a GT car. also, a little known fact is that if ALfred GOerhtz had never worked for nissan, the ZX is closer to what nissan wanted to introduce in 1970 as the Z. it was Mr. Goertz that swayed the design to the now familiar shape of the 240Z.
I currently own a 1980 280zx and cannot be happier. I have owned a 240Z, 260Z and also a 280Z. all were wonderful cars. the misconception that a 280zx is an overweight pig is just that, a misconception. My 1980 2+2 with me in it (180lbs) a 1/4 tank of gas and all my junkyard haul and tools, spare tire, jack and all weighed in at 2960. take me out, 2770lbs, take the junkyard parts & tools out, 2720lbs, now take spare tire and jack out, probably right around 2700lbs, and this is a 4 seater!
dont playa hate, apreciate!
