help............
Gentlemen and Women,
I bought a 77 280z and put a 83zx engine in it with duel carbs to boot. If your wondering why the different engine? The other one threw a rod. Now the carbs are said to easier to work on but since changing from fuel injection to carbs it just seems to be problem after problem. I think that the slave valve is going out but i'm not for sure. When i shift the car into gear sometimes it goes and other times i have to pump the clutch
to get the pressure back in. Now that's problem number one,the other is over heating, can anyone give me some advice on some checks to do for overheating? clutch fan, radiator and thermostat and the cooling system so what should i really look for. I realize that i'm going on and on but I bought this car to enjoy the ride but so far I've been afraid to drive it anywhere because towing can cost you some money in the long run. If anyone has any help or suggestions please email me.
thanks for your help.......................zviln

Re: help............
My experience with carbs is that you have to be prepared to do alot of maintenance. I highly recommend reconditioning the carbs if they haven't already been done I believe it will save you alot in the end. The only reason I've not gone to fuel injection is because I've been told you loose horse power. I'm not so sure though. As for overheating well I'm relatively unfamilair with that but here's what it could be??? Your water pump may be corroded and need replacing. The thermostat may be no functioning properly and not opening at the right tempreture. An insufficient amount of coolant could be a problem I know that my 240z had straight water in it and it tended to get pretty hot even with a clutch fan. I'm assuming you've checked the levels in the radiator and found no holes or anything like that. If you have air gaps in your cooling system that can cause it to get hot when the engine is idling so make sure the radiator is full most likely you have.
Other than that I'm no real expert you could also get a bigger radiator early z's had 2 core radiators and they had a tendency to overheat later ones were fitted with 3 core radiators.
Let me know how you go anyway.
