Gearshift Problems?
A car I am looking a buying had problems with the gearbox, and i was wondering what was wrong and how exspensive it would be to fix. The shifting was really sloppy, and it was you had to get the technique right to get it in the right gear, i.e if you were going for third, you might put it in fifth without knowing. The guy said he thought all 240z gearboxes were like that, but i don't know. Does anyone know what the problem is, and how it can be fixed at what price? Thanks.

Re: Gearshift Problems?
Does the gearbox have a flange mount to the tailshaft or a slip-in spline?
The flange mount is what is known as the 'A' series gearbox (FS5C71A), used in the Fairlady Roadsters & 1970 240Z's. They use the Porsche Synchros (good) & the 'monkey-motion' linkage (bad) (the same as the 1600/180B) which can be can be as sloppy as. The spline output models are the 'B' series (FS5C71B) and they have the shift the same as the 260Z/280ZX/Bluebird/200B/R30 etc. They use the Borg- Warner Syncros (not as good). But have a much better shift linkage assembly. The 'C' series is what you see attached to the RB & SR engines etc. There are variants of these units in gearing (close ratio, Option-1/2/3 etc) but the basic series-unit is the same. Also what is the chassis number of the car? (located above the clutch master cylinder) |
Re: Gearshift Problems?
My B series box with new bearings is very positive and tight with no play in the shifter. There is also a bush on the gear leaver which can get worn and cause some play.

Re: Gearshift Problems?
I don't know the chassis number, as i'm thinking of buying the car off the guy, it's a '71 Z, and it has five sped, apart from that i don't kow much about it.

Re: Gearshift Problems?
Alan the 71's did come with 5 speeds in the US. Must have been converted. The center console has to be cut to make room for it to shift properly. You will have to get the number off the transmission to figure out what it is. The Internet Z club has the number.

Re: Gearshift Problems?
Yes but Alan lives in Australia from memory and we got 5speed gearbox's stock with our 240z's.

Re: Gearshift Problems?
gav... they came as an option not as stock.. but i am pretty sure more than 70% that came as manual are 5speeds... dealers gave the option as a package or something... if memory is correct...

Re: Gearshift Problems?
All 240Z's in Australia came with a 5 speed gearbox or an auto, no 4 speeds. It sounds like a flange type box. It is easy enough to get a later box out of a 260Z, 240K, or Skyline and convert. The later type box is stronger and parts are easier to get. Contact Zxtras in Melbourne, they will be able to help you. Phone no. is 03 93251100
hope this helps Allan |
Re: Gearshift Problems?
a reco 5sp box should set you back around AUD$600-700, plus around $100 to fit.
