Electrical Gremlins

Ok Right now I have a few bugs in the wiring. At the moment My Dash lights don't work and my Side markers and tail lights. But headlights, reverse lights, turn signals (but not hazards) and brake lights work. I have no blown fuses or fuseable links either and I already checked the headlight switch. I have power to the headlight side of the switch but not the dash/tail/sidemarkers Side. Any ideas whats wrong?
I would check the FSM wiring diagram. IF I COULD READ THE DAMN THING! Its to fuzzy to make sense out of and its in black and white. so no help there.

check your grounds if you have power.e

BlueKitsune 11-06-2009 04:59 PM

Grounds are fine, no power to the lights themselves or thought the switch.

I'm pretty sure the lights you are missing are all on the same circuit including the dome light. Check for power at the fuse panel across the fuse terminals for "tailights". Check for meltdowns on the back of the panel. I have a diagram at work that is in color and when I had the eng dept blow it up to 2'x3' it is still crystal clear. I will repost it next week.

BlueKitsune 11-06-2009 06:04 PM

Huh that would explain why the dome light doesn't work... I'll double check the fuses really quick. Thanks!

BlueKitsune 11-06-2009 06:22 PM

Well Damn I just pulled off the fuse cover and Its been melted over the tail light fuse, Once I get it open I find one side of the fuse clip is broken off! well now I need to figure out which wire is for the tail lights and just wire in an inline fuse holder. I'll check the tail lights and side markers against in the morning, I must have missed something

BlueKitsune 11-06-2009 08:14 PM

Ok I noticed one of my rear side markers was out, Well I start to open the case to change the bulb and I found a little bit of corrosion once open.

I Dont know... Maybe This is why that fuse keeps burning out after awhile? [/sarcasm]

PurePontiacKid 11-06-2009 09:01 PM

naw, that looks normal.

BlueKitsune 11-06-2009 09:07 PM

For a old S30? ... Ya your right lol

BlueKitsune 11-07-2009 04:03 PM

Great now my turn signals seem to work at random and the hazards don't work at all! Well Only so much stuff to fix before you run out of things to fix lol

theramz 11-07-2009 04:12 PM

Pace yourself. lol The hazards are on a seperate circuit too I think. While your digging around unplug the connectors and spray them with contact cleaner. That marker looks like it was dipped in pool acid. btw a common mistake is to put a larger fuse to compensate for the problem which is why the panel melts.

BlueKitsune 11-07-2009 05:03 PM

Ah I'll have to see if there's a bigger fuse in there then it should have. well this is gonna be interesting to figure out the bugs. well I'll start at the fuses, work my way to the switch then the lights.

Install relays and spade style fuses on everything!!! It will make a world of difference on your electronics and make your life easy!! (after its done)

Thats what you did huh? Use the switches to trigger the relays which turn on the lights.

Got a wiring diagram? When I convert this engine to carbs I will probably have to redo all the light wiring as well as my luck I'll cut the wrong wires trying to gut the EFI out lol

Made an entire harness front to back, uses the MSA headlight relay harness for the headlights though and have everything on its own switch. Pretty much run a relay on everything possible.

BlueKitsune 11-07-2009 08:43 PM

Ah I see. Well thats simple enough

hoov100 11-07-2009 10:37 PM

As it sits right now, I have 5 relays in the engine compartment, and nine in the interior.
