Re: drifting

well to be honest the z32 can do it, but its really awkward feeling for me because its so wide inside, and the front passenger corner isnt visible. and its a fatty :)

when my 240z is ready Ill tell you how that works out :)

cool, thanks man.

Re: drifting

well I herd that a limited slip differntail was nessary for drifting. If you need one I know the first gen 300zxt came with one and is a direct bolt on to the 280zxt.

Re: drifting

i think at one point someone put an LSD in my 73 240 b/c when i pop the clutch it lays two solid even tire marks. i could be wrong but i always thought that meant it had an LSD.

Re: drifting

i drifted my 72 Z a few times. since the car has a crap load of the weight in the front, with enough practice, you can stay sideways for a good length of time. but becareful, in my earlier attempts i thought i was "skilled" enough to do it on a public street and almost powerslid rite into a center divider.
to enhance my car, im going to add an LSD, coilovers, and build the engine for more torque

Re: drifting

I drift my pretty standard 260Z 2+2 in the wet and have had some pretty good drifts in it. I don't have an LSD either.
My setup is 240Z carbs and manifold, extractors, mild cam, and some michelin tyres 195 75R 14

Re: drifting

Thats awesome...Do you know how much a 79 280z would weigh..and how good it would be at drifting..

Re: drifting

yeah but what about the wheel hops. My friend has a v8 third gen camaro that has a lot more touqe then the line engines and he always has wheel hop. Also, the front of the cars that are doing the drifting on this post are heaver then the backs. Not to metion wet roads, my friend s10 4 banger drifts on wet roads. Well the same friend has a 87 Conquest that can drift better than all the datsuns because it has LSD. I don't want to be a dick but I would like some real facts please.

Re: drifting

well i can get mine to drift if i have enough space, and enough speed, usually drift at around 50kph, get the whole car moving engine reving at around 5500 in 2nd... spins quite nicely once you slip the rear out... its not that hard in the wet, in the dry its alot harder, easier on smooth road.. i started practiceng on larger roundabouts and U turns at the start then moved onto T intersections.. but i spend alota time just doing that.. my car hasn't got that much straght line speed... practice makes perfect

Re: drifting

If your definition of drifting is sliding out or fish tailng. The best pace I know to practice is in the snow and ice. I have a 78 and it loves to break free and go sideways. I enoy the challenge of not losing it on the ice. I usually practice in the mall parking lot on sunday mornings before anyone is there and the ice is still hard not slushy. I have learned in my Z that if I play the throttle I can slide for a good long time, and come out of it straight. My Z does have a R-200 LSD. I also like the roads after a fresh rain in the summer. I hit the highway thru the Palisades res. here in Idaho Run up thru Jackson and back. the turns are awesome and you can get your Z pretty sideways. That is the one main thing I like about a Z over any front drive car. You can get sideways and survive in a Z but in Honda your toast.

I currently drift an R32 fourdoor skyline, its pritty much all I do with it so its well setup for drift.
I used to own a 240z, loved it but never got it on the road as it was defected so I sold it to buy some good coilovers for my skyline.
I've now got the offer to sell the skyline and buy a 1972 240z with an RB30(25)DET making 370hp on 9psi, vg30dett gearbox and 2way LSD, bigger disc brakes, etc but I'm worried that if i swap the skyline (which is an excellent drift car) for the zed that the zed wont keep up with the other drifters on the track.
I'm very slowly making my way up the ladder in the state drift comps and dont wont to change cars only to find I'm at the bottom of the ladder again.

From your comments it sounds like the zed has an ok suspension setup for drift but your all talking about drifting at low speeds, I need it to handle well at higher speeds, I know I could widen the track a little for more stability but im not sure how strong/stiff the suspension on a 240 is.

Any help would be well appretiated

last post in this thread was in 2002.

=premo= 05-09-2007 02:50 PM

noticed that, but my question still stands, hopefully someone out there will reply

Cronicus 05-09-2007 05:28 PM

ive been trying to drift this thing i think it needs more torque though i kinda gota toss it around to break em loose consistetnly.
does any 1 have a good recomendation for a different rear end setup.

snwbrderphat540 05-09-2007 05:53 PM

power brute.... its a swap into your stock rear end. made by precision gear. i hear its a pretty damn stiff LSD as well. otherwise, go custom get like a Z32 rear end in there, they are strong as balls.

snwbrderphat540 05-09-2007 06:09 PM

here is another thread you should look at
https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...t=22641&page=2

=premo= 05-09-2007 07:57 PM

the zed im looking at has an r32 r200 lsd with cusom made en26 axels with v8 commodore cv's. which i could replace with the kaaz 2-way from my skyline

Cronicus 05-09-2007 08:52 PM

nice.
but back to that thread link, i dont think i could trust my self either, assembling a rear end. now swaping the z32 ass onto mine, how is that gona play with the power band/acceleration really my main interest over drifing!

snwbrderphat540 05-09-2007 08:58 PM

ummmm.... if your nut up to assembling the LSD unit i dont know how you could takle putting up a Z32 rear end

=premo= 05-10-2007 04:04 PM

anyone in south australia want to lend me their 240 for a quick slide?

snwbrderphat540 05-10-2007 05:28 PM

only person in australia is coolie with a 2+2 240 thats all stock, so no sliding there. and tehn there is frank but i think he is in new zealand, for was it netherlands, idk, but its a 280zx any who.

=premo= 05-10-2007 11:16 PM

Bleach 05-11-2007 07:33 AM

Frank is in Europe :D

lower your gear ratio. 4.11 LSD will break 'em loose, and make sure you have light weight wheels. No 18's

snwbrderphat540 05-11-2007 02:18 PM

fo show, go 16's they got some pretty light ass ones out there, plus, anything bigger than 16 under an S30 looks goofy. and ive seen another clip with an S30 in a drifing competition and did awsome, but wasnt smoking the tires very much. which is part of what you get judged on.
