clutch question
I recently put a auto zone clutch in my 77 280Z because mine was worn out, and chattered really bad.... Well, after I replaced it, I was expecting a dramatic change in where the pedal grabs, and the feel. Needless to say, the chatter is gone, but the new clutch doesn't grab until the top of the pedal just like the old one. Do I need a new flywheel???

you don't always have to resurface the flywheel, but it's recommended. I recently replaced the clutch on my 72 240Z, and it runs fine. I noticed after I spun the tires for a while, my clutch started to slip again. All I did was crawl underneath the car, and move the clutch arm forward more. it takes no longer than 5 mins, and you can be back on the road.

i had the same problem with a clutch from advance auto (it was a zoom clutch).... my clutch slipped real bad if you tried to launch from anything above 2500, or when i wast auto-xing going into second it would slip. i replaced it with a new one, resurfaced the clutch, and it STILL DID IT!!!!! boy was i a little upset with that one. could never even chirp the tires going into second. so, i said that was enough, and went to a centerforce stage 3 (dual friction) and i LOVE that clutch. grabs harder than a fat kid defending his food, and the hotter it gets, the stickier it gets! great investment in my opinion....

Hey Jeremy. You mentioned in your post that you just moved the clutch arm forward. How do you do this??? Mine slides into a groove in the throwout bearing, and has 2 spring clips that hold it in place.. Wasn't aware that there was any adjustment on the clutch. I tried adjusting the pivot ball bolt but that didn't really help much.

well, here's what you have to do. Crawl underneath your Z, right about where the front passenger wheelwell is. On the passenger side of the transmission itself is the hydraulic clutch adjustment thing (I don't know the real name). You'll know it when you see it, it's got tubes running down to it and a huge spring on it. Take the spring off, and get a wrench to fit the bolt that it has on there. Loosen the frontmost bolt, and there is an arm right behind it (going from front of car back), attached to the same mechanism. You need to get a wrench to fit the little bolt on the clutch arm, and a large screwdriver to turn the threaded screw-mechanism thing. To tighten it, just make it so that the distance between the front of the mechanism and the clutch arm is shorter. (if you need, I can scan pics to show you). Good luck!
