Cheap Intake
Here's a cheaper way to getting more horsepower then spending a lot for it. If you're smart first you'll buy a K&N Filter ( or you could use your stock filter ) in any case they are the same size. Take just the filter to your local glass or plexi-glass shop. I work in a glass shop, so it was free for me to make myself from some scrap piece laying around. I don't know exactually how much it would cost but I can't imagine more then 20 or 30 bucks. Have them make a pattern to fit the size of the filter ( in other words your making a new cover ) Make sure to specify 1/8 inch plexi, any color or clear ( I chose black, just cause it looks better, but I think clear is cheaper ) or the wing nuts will not hold the cover down. Then just mark the 2 holes for the bolts and drill. When you place the cover on it may seem it won't work, but it's plexi-glass so it will bend a little, just don't push too hard it it will break, just enough to get a few turns for the wing nuts. This way you're suckin in air from all sides instead of a narrow 3-4" tube which is 1 1/2 ft long. I definately have noticed more power. And it make's that cool "intake" sound really loud from around 2500 rpm all the way to red-line! I suppose if you wanted to you could cut the metal housing off all around so you would get true 360 degree intake, but you might end up sucking water in. I just left mine like it is. I live in Washington so we get plenty of rain, and I've never had a problem with water collecting in there. Unfortunately, this would only work for a 280 ZX. My friend had a Honda CRX, which has a filter similar to the older Z's, the square type. His filter was bolted from underneath the tube, so you'd have to turn it upside down somehow and just leave the rest of the box off. Any questions, email me at ShadWarr1@centurytel.net.
