Some Parts stores will actually come out in the parking lot and check the entire charging system for free on their testing equipment. You get what you pay for, my alternator is the original one!

If it bothers you that much Sears will test your entire charging system out for $9.95. Now on the other hand, if you don't mind changing alternators you can hit the parts store and buy one of the ones with a lifetime replacement warranty and then every time it dies just take if back and exchange it...for FREE!

I had a similar problem on my Z31. I purchased a reman alternator from The Auto Parts Club. That thing would die every 3-6 months. I even had some that were defective right out of the box. Some would quit charging. Others would charge at 17 volts (not good). I got to the point where I could change them in 20 minutes with my eyes closed. After about 6 alternator replacements I was very concerned that I had a problem with the car. I took the alternator to a place called Auto Lectrics in San Jose on White Oak Road. They tested the alternator and were able to determine it was the alternator and not anything in my car. I bought a Reman from them for about $70 bucks (after core refund). I had the car for 2 more years before I sold it. Never had another charging problem. I could be just a cheap alternator that the guy has, but you should get it checked.

The alternator on a Z31 isn't that bad. With the car in the air, all you have to do is drop the belly pan, remove the wiring harness and remove 3 bolts (The rear bolt requires a long extention and a swivel socket). It drops right out after that. After you change out a half dozen of them, it's much easier.

That Shucks/Kragen rebuilt stuff is crap. Most of it is rebuilt offshore like in Taiwan. Same thing goes for their lifetime starters. I go through one a year...and still underwarrantee. You can buy factory Nissan alternators through Nissanparts.cc for about $65 I think. Now those will last a few years.
