so is it operated of of vacuum hoses like my zx and diaphrams or are you just refering to the defroster hoses because they are intact i spoke w/ my friend and he says it goes through the other vents but eventually kicks on and goes throught the defroster outlets maybe takes while to build up vacuum pres leaks i don't know i would really like diagrams so i can give them to him and he can operate on it like a mad man at a frankenstein convention

Re: 78 280z heater help!

Actually, that sounds like a leak in the defroster canister line. That happened on my 280Z once. In the engine compartment there is a round canister that builds pressure to move levers for your heater/defroster controls. Mine had an old cracked line running to it. Replacing the line fixed the problem. In this picture, the canister I'm talking about is below the oil cap, along the right side of the engine compartment.

Re: 78 280z heater help!

I just fixed this EXACT same problem on my 77 last week. I fixed mine by replacing the small vacuum lines around the vacuum solenoid switches on the passenger side just above the vacuum resevoir. There is a small "T" fitting there with small vacuum hoses attached (only about 1" long) these may need replaced. Check condition of all lines in this area. I also shot some WD-40 into the bottom of these switches to free them up. Check all attachment points under the hood first before up dig into your dash. Even a small leak in the system can cause the acuator door under the dash not to function. Check also condtion of hoses under the hood and replace as needed. The system is realtively simple so check undr the dash for loose attachments or removed lines. Just behind and above the radio is the heater vacuum attachment point(kind of a round thing with a few vacuum hoses on it) look for removed or leaky lines here. Check the vacuum assembly on the right side ust up under the dash(you can see it with a flashlight) and check for secure hoses there as well. This assembly controls your door which diverts air over your heater core. Most of these probs are just amatter of leaky or non attached hoses in the system. As I said, start at the small hoses under the hood. Good Luck. RH
