'77 280z headjob

Just picked up a '77 280z for $1,100 with minor rust but needs work on the motor. The N47 was cracked so the machine shop couldn't do anything with it. I searched but couldn't find the info I need...can I put an N42 head on my stock l28 block? From what I've read the manifold is different but the articles weren't too clear. Also wanted to ask what modifications I can make while I got the piece at the machine shop to get some power out of it. I got about $2k to spend. I run a shop with my bad in Miami so I dont have to pay for the body work. He's putting the motor together himself...making things faster is not something he understands lol. I figured while its all apart might as well do it all now. All input is appreciated.

All the L6 heads will "fit". The fi manifolds will only bolt on to the fi heads. The carb manifold will bolt on any of the heads. To mod the engine for any big gain will eat that 2k fast. If it were mine I would put a header and exhaust to make it sound good and buy some nice wheels and tires.

Ok I found an e31 head with intake manifold and carbs for $220. I been searching and its a good deal. A lot of people are running the e31/l28 combo most have no issues with compression. I'm picking it up tonight, any last thoughts?

I would have it rebuilt with the 280 valves put in it along with a street cam. See if the shop can also recondition the rockers/lash pads. Do some more searches before you do all this. The early heads use a spray bar to oil the cam. You need to change the fuel pump for a 3-5 psi one. There goes haf your $ !

I get good prices at the machine shop...as far as the fuel pump I gotta look into that. Why replace the fuel pump though??
