77 280z chrome hood vents
I've not seen it done, but I've looked into a lot of plastic "chroming" options. If they're stock vents, they're plastic, so they can't just be plated (unless you go the expensive route used for bronzing baby shoes, etc.). You need to find someone to do vacuum metalization (the same way the chrome-looking plastic taillight bezels were done, actually vac deposition of aluminum).
When I looked a couple of years ago, it was near impossible to find a place that would do small batch work for auto restorers. However, some places have sprung up since then, as the restoration crowd has gotten interested in late 70's and early 80's cars. Paul's Chrome will do it, but it'll really cost you. Some smaller manufacturing type places have started doing this sort of work, too. Try www.cvvacuumplaters.com, and just googling for rechroming plastic, vacuum metalization, and if you're in a larger city area look under metal finishers in your local yellow pages. Call around. Even if an outfit doesn't do that kind of work, they might know a local place that does.
Here's another one: http://www.profinishinc.com/
Also: pick up an issue of Hemmings. The vacuum metalization shops are popping up in there now, too.
good luck,
Dave
