72z Back fire Problem

I have a 1972z I had the carbs adjusted and the vehicle past AZ emissions. I had a small exhaust leak and I replaced the header pipe. Yet still everytime I shift and clutch to go into the next gear I get the popping sound through ehaust pipe. It does have a slight miss still at idle. I just need some direction on how to solve the problem it is a little embarrasing.
I am a New Z person and I have definitely caught the fever. OneOne last thing the car in my mind does not have he Zip that everyone seems to say the Z has any thoughts?
Thanks for your HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 72z Back fire Problem

I HAVE FOUND THAT A POP IS COMMON ON A STK CAR WITH SOME MILES THE CARBS WEAR AND GO RICH. WHAT HAPENS IS WEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS THE FUEL STILL GOES IN THE ENG. BUT IS NOT BURNED THE GAS GOES INTO THE EXHAUST, THEN THE SMOG PUMP PUTS FRESH O2 INTO THE EXHAUST AND BOOM IT BURNS. TO CHECK THIS GENTLY SO AS NOT TO BRAKE THE OLD HOSE FROM THE PUMP TO THE EXHUAST CRIMP IT OFF OR REMOVE THE VALVE AND GET A PIPE CAP TO PLUG IT THEN DRIVE IT. I BET IT WILL BE GONE. I FORGET THE PLUG SIZE BUT IT IS PIPE THREAD AND AVAILABLE AT THE HARDWEAR STORE FOR UNDER 2$.

THANKS ONEFSTZ!!!!!!!!!!!
You hit the problem right on the head. $1.99 later I have no more backfire!!
You figured out what the auto folks around here didn't have a clue about.
Thanks Again!

where is this pipe/tube? i have this problem on my 260z (with 72SU carbs) and i'd like to fix it, except mine seems to backfire through the carbs, and not through the exhaust.

if backfire thou the carbs, meaning u needa get a tune up, check ur timing also...

i had that problem and it was chokeing for air, as the air flow was relly STUFFED.. so i did that right and it feels all good right now..
