240z that will not start
 

I'm located in Bremerton Washington on the Naval base there
The car was running before it got a tune up then ran great then the spark plug wires gave out soI barely got it moving off base to an auto zone then i got them replaced and then the accelleration was acting up it it felt like it didnt want to accelerate. i got it back to base and had a freind look at it and now it will not start at all. I'm nost sure if the car is a late 72 or and early one. the timing was set at 0 but then it was adjusted to something i didnt look becuase my friend was there working with it. the distributor cap was removed and that was it. and i was busy looking at something else. The engine is a straight 6

TO ANDYZ240Z that will NOT start.
I had a similar problem with my 280Z, check to see if you're getting a spark by taking out a spark plug and starting the car. If no spark is visible, then, like in my case the distributor was bad. An excellent Z-mechanic replaced mine with one from a 1980 Z car and it runs real sweet now. total cost was $299.

ok, here's what I say to do....I've had problems with my spark plug wires all the time...so do this. First off, try replacing the points on the distributor. the gap needs to be at .020 in order for it to be correct. After gapping the points, make sure that the spark plugs are all gapped correctly, and the gapping for the spark plugs is .030 to .035 (.8 to .9 mm). After that, make sure the plugs are snug, but not too tight. Then, make sure the firing order of the car is correct, from radiator to muffler (the cylinders) is one to six (123456), and looking at the distributor cap, going counter clockwise the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 (the number one cylinder wire on the distributor cap is the one on the top right. After checking all of that, and making sure everything is snug, it should start. If it does, I'd make sure to take it down to a mechanic and have it looked at. For a while my Z wouldn't start, but we sprayed some starter fluid into the carburetor, and that seemed to help it out, try that too if you want. Good Luck!
