240 doesn't charge
hey guys--- I got a new alternator and voltage regulator--- and it still isn't charging! its around -10 amps sitting at idle.
If I give power to one of the wires in the harness that plugs into the alternator then it charges, but when I leave it like that and I rev it it overcharges (almost 16 volts on the gauge)... so I know the alternator is working.. that leaves the voltage regulator (which is new) and the wiring-- any ideas guys? -Steve http://hometown.aol.com/stev240z |

Re: 240 doesn't charge
Hey guy,
At idle it will be at a low reading, specs are 14.3-15.3 volts @ 2500 rpms. That would be at a fast idle or cruising.(Chiltons ch.3- pg 19). Hope this helps Mark |
FIXED
yeah i found the problem... theres a black/white wire going to the regulator which is supposed to get + current when the ignition is "ON"--- this one was getting nothing---so I ran a wire from the black/white wire under the dash that gets power "ON" to that one and it charges just fine now!

Re: FIXED
Steve what Alternator are you running? My 260z fried 2 alternators because the thermofan sucked so much power. So I upgraded to something a bit bigger off a 280zx but I still feel I need something better. The amp output of the old alternators is too low.
It's no big deal but because the 260z was written off just wanting to know for when the 240z hits the road. Gavin, Melbourne Australia 73' Datsun 240z
Edited by 240z on 08/30/02 01:44 AM.
|
