240 or 260?
I am about to buy a Z, and i cannot decide. I can either get a 240z, which is my favourite, but they are hard to find in adelaide, or a 260z, which i don't mind, but i would prefer a 240z. How can i take to smog stuff off of a 260z to get it to preform better?

Re: 240 or 260?
Is that all it is just replace the carbs? Is the 240z noticably quckier, and if you replace the carbs on a an L26 do you get more power with the bigger displacement? I looked at a 240z with an L28 in it, costing 10,000AUD, I think it is worth it as the guy rebuilt it from the bare shell, completely rebuilt the motor so it was in excellent condition, i don't know though, 10g is a lot of money. Thanks for your reply.

Re: 240 or 260?
are u in aus...
a 240z in aus goin for 10,000 would mean that the engine is very good condition and the body is in excellant condition... no rust nice paint, good interoir.. basically very little work needed to get it on the road, or looking spectacular...
I'd pay 10,000 on a 240z with a greatly moded L28, as long as the body is in perfect condition... thats al that matters...

yeah, in adelaide. It was in excellent condition, the guy rebuilt it from the shell, so there was basically no rust. He also rebuilt the L28, it had good racing suspension, racing seats, harnesses etc. The only problem was it had the front spoiler, which i don't really like, how had would it be to remove? Also it had a rear spoiler moulded on which i think would be a bitch to remove, apart from that it was pretty good.

Re: 240 or 260?
the front spoiler isn't to hard to remove as long as no molding was done... the rear because it was molded would be a bit of a strugle to get off, but not that hard, but u'd need to do repainting of corse... if its an orginal front G-nose spoiler i know i'd buy it off ya for a cheap price...
i'm in melbourne... i'd say that Z is worth it... as long as no rust like u said... he woulda put alot more than 10,000 into that car....

Re: 240 or 260?
some people are hard fans of only 240s, some love 260s, and some 280s. lots of z poeple don't like anything but their own model, they don't even like the 280 zx. yes the 240 is the most sought after because it was first and is the lightest. the early 260 is extremely close to the 240 and tons of parts interchangeBUT IT IS SLIGHTLY HEAVIER. the 280 is again heavier but definatly more solid than a 240 and 260 but it all depends wether weight is your main concern. i have two early 260s and couldn't be happier, while there are people who wouldn't touch them for whatever reason. if weight is a major factor grab a 240. if your looking for something a little heavier{not much} and stronger than grab an early 260 which is very similar to the 240 or the late 260 which is more like the 280, or grab a 280. ALL CHOICES ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEY ARE Z'S !!!!

Re: 240 or 260?
I totaly agree..... I own both a 240Z 1972 and a 260Z 2+2 1978 and they are completely different cars to drive. I recently put 240Z carbs and airbox on the 260Z which gave it a massive increase but still doesnt touch the handling or speed of the 240Z... and the dash shap is better in the 240 :P

Re: 240 or 260?
doesnt really matter that much - there isnt much difference between then except the carbs.
The 240Z has classic status, which means nice ones are going for 6-7000 at the moment. 260Z's are a bit cheaper and i think in the Oz market will do fairly well interms of holing their value.
Mr Anonymous above is completely wrong. The 260Z weighs in at about 1050kg's, the 240Z i think is around 1000kg so there isnt much difference in wieght at all.
Most of the 240Z/260Z's seem to have L28 blocks in them too...
Also depends on how long you are going to keep the car. A well tuned 260Z with 240Z carbs should be just as quick as 240Z - it doesn have an extra 200cc's of displacement to help it out.
The 260 is more common too...

Re: 240 or 260?
I'd pay 10K for a schmick 240 anyday. My car has over $30000AUD invested in it over 4 1/2 years & currently has no interior, no engine, & no wiring installed....
The facts here in Aus are: most S30 series cars were sold as auto's & most GS30's were 2+2's. So the chances are you'll find only auto 240Z's. If the car was delivered as manual the value is higher, and if it is one of the first 500 (1970 model) the value is higher again.
A good coupe is hard to find, so at the end of the day get the one in the best condition you can find - body wise. They are all a piece of cake to work on mechanically & if you haven't looked at Nismo/MSA/Vic British etc etc already, you don't know how common aftermarket parts are.
And if you're putting an RB or V8 with 350+BHP in it, 50kg of weight is going to make bugger-all difference.
I'm a 240Z fan, but if I found an excellent 260Z coupe, I would definately consider it.

Re: 240 or 260?
I have a 260z, and am kicking myself that i didn't wait and find a quality 240z.... even thou my 260z is a quality machine now, 4000 spent on a 2000 car... but mine is perfect mechanically but just not body wise... no rust, but a few dents and paint... another 2000 - 3000 will get me a perfect 260z, but to me it is still a 260z... and i rather the 240z just has more of a classic style and sounds better than 260z.. and it weighs less, and they are more rare, and IMO better, only due to my fact that older is better... hehe..
i'd pay 10,000 for a straight bodied 240z, it would be worth it in the whole... espeically if its got a L28, SU's 5 speed, R200 rear... it will go hard... and worth the 10,000

Re: 240 or 260?
I've got a 260z, bought it without any smog stuff and it runs great. I've been in lots of mint condition 240z and 260z and I've gotta say i like the interior of the 260z a bit more. And considering that's what I see the most, i'm pretty happy with it! Yeah, the 240z is a bit lighter and everything, but that really doesn't bother me, it depends on what you want out of the car. If you're looking for all out performance then hell yeah, wait for a nice 240.. but if you want just a cruising car the 260z coupe might be just the ticket, and possibly cheaper! Take a look at both interiors, more importantly the center console.. they're a bit different.. i dunno.. im just picky about my zeds, hehe..

Even though the 260 is more recent than the 240, it was only made for one year in the US as opposed to the 240's 3-4. 260's are more rare. I'd be happy with either but I have to stick up for the 260
The engine is bigger and all the emissions crap can be taken off (trust me, i did it). The 240 head(E88?) gives you higher compression which could give you even more power on the L26. Other than the engines they are essentially the same cars. It really just depends on what year you want.

It would be a rarity.
