1980 ZX irritating problem

Hey everyone, it's my first post here. Glad to see there's a forum SOMEWHERE for old school Z cars.
I'm having a rather irritating problem with my 1980 ZX. About a week ago, I was passing someone, and I was taking it up to about 5500 rpms. Around that point, the car seemed to lurch suddenly then continue going, but my CD Player wasn't working, and my voltmeter was toast. All the lights (e.g., Fuel, Door, Light, Brake) were on, and they hadn't been moments before. It still ran though. A few seconds later, the voltmeter and CD player came back on, but now everytime I hit the brakes, the CD Player cuts off for a second, then back on. Not only that, but the voltmeter is now showing much higher voltage than it should (~15-17 V) while I accelerate. And to top it off, the battery doesn't seem to be getting a charge at all. If I leave it running, the car will just eventually die, and if I try to gas it, it won't do anything. Fuel delivery is not a problem. I tore off all the tape around the wiring in the engine compartment going from the Alternator to the fusible links, and all of them look clean (relatively, anyway). I thought it could be a bad voltage regulator in the Alternator, so I replaced it, but to no avail. I also replaced the battery, and the problem is persisting. I've parsed the wiring diagrams for my model and found some connections to the affected parts, but it all looks okay. My question to you guys is do any of you know of any possible trouble spots or hot spots where Z's typically have a short occur? ANY help would be appreciated tremendously.

This may sound like a dumb question after you've gone through so much, but are you sure the alternator is in good working order? Have you had it tested? When the alternator isn't working correctly all of the dash lights will come on, basicly because the system doesn't have enough power to get back a good sensor reading. Hope you don't have any crossed wires, it's a lot more commen for the alt to die.
