1977 280z fuel gauge issue

So my fuel gauge doesn't work. My fuel sender works and i have continuity to it and 12v to everything. I took the gauge apart and cleaned the contacts inside reassembled it and it kinda worked but the needle was never consistent and it would just rise and fall repeatedly and then it just stopped working again any advise??

The sending unit sends OHM readings. You need to pull the sender out of the tank and clean the tabs on the bar. Then check OHM reading across the +/ terminals. It should vary when raising and lowering the float

A positive continuity test will show ok if the is a short to ground. You need to test OHM readings to be sure. Check it at the sensor terminals with the wires disconnect to prevent a false reading. If that shows ok then test the terminal ends at the gauge disconnected sensor ends hooked up.

Yes I ohmed the sending unit its in the gauge I'm asking if there's a specific way to repair the gauge I got it to somewhat work by cleaning the "points" I guess you could call them, inside the gauge but the gauge would rise and fall rise and fall. Would it screw up the sending system if I fixed those points to not open?
