Wiring the Alternator

I've got my project car up and running(78 280z). Since i've stripped it down to the bare essentials for racing, I've got a question about wiring the stock alternator back into the system.

I've looked at many diagrams and most show a voltage regulator. My friend says that this unit should be self regulated. True?

My thoughts are

Black wire to the negative on the battery
White/Red wire to the positve on the battery with possibly a voltage regulator in between.

The small blue wire most be for the voltage gauge..

Thoughts? Recommendations for an aftermarket or inexpensive regulator?

The white/red wire goes to the fusible like and then the battery. The black is common ground. The blue goes to the condensor. You should download the fsm for your year.

im not sure if the 280's also were equipped stock with the 45 amp alternator, but i know my 240z was, and that one wasnt any good so i upgraded to a nice new 60amp and it works great.

your local napa might be able to help you out if you bring in what you have and tell them what you want. thats what i did.

Stock, the 78 did NOT have a voltage regulator. Look at the wiring diagram from the FSM. That is probably the one you should trust the most.
