will i ever pass emisions

i have a 77 280z i bought about a year ago and it's time for me to renew my tags. so i was looking at my engine and the previous owner put a header on blocked off the egr took off the cat and there is no O2 sensor. i put a cat on that i got from my friend and took it though the deq test it failed. what do you think i should do to get it to pass?

I'm currently collecting parts for a turbo swap and i was going to run megasquirt if i put ms on now could i get to pass?

Where Do You Live? And A Ms Setup Can Help You Pass It Depends On How You Have It Setup.

First of all it would help if we knew in how you failed. If it was you NOx, then it is no doubt due to the fact that the EGR is blocked off. But we need more info before we can give you any good advice.

my car passed flying colors with the egr dissconnected. all you need to offset that is a bottle of methyl hydrate, plus fill up your rear tires, it helps reduce drag on the dyno, thus creating less rolling resistance, also you can unplug #5 injector if there is no visual inspection, the #5 acts like a air pump, and runs on only 5, then it helps to lower the emmisions. it may sound odd, but all this stuff works, i can get and l28 n/a to pass with these simple tips, also raise your idle to 1000 rpm. try it, and post more info if it still doesnt pass

Where I LIVE They Don't Do It On A Dyyno The Stick It In The Pipe.

in your faces.... move to IL we no longer emmision anything but OBDII boo yah.. that or register it with classic plates. they dont emmision those cars..

south dakota doesn't have emissions testing at all ;)

Another perk is there is plenty of E85 out here and it's only $1.65 a gallon for 100+ octane...guess what my engine swap is going to run off of :unibrow:

what ever... i hope you havent taken out your engine and shit yet. i want some pictures for reference. ugh....

skittle 12-09-2006 12:17 AM

yeah if i move to nebraska no emissions thank god

Without a cat, it's REALLY hard to pass emissions. REALLY HARD. Did the previous owner say it passed like that last time? 650ppm HC is pretty high and without a cat you won't ever get it under 400.

So do this:
-Install a cat
-Make sure the timing is adjusted correctly (or even retarded slightly)

PS... When I took my Porsche to emissions, the HC was 21,000ppm. OOFA!!!

snwbrderphat540 12-09-2006 10:40 AM

21,000....... did the people there like piss there pants when that came up...

RodMoyes 12-10-2006 11:32 AM

That year didn't have an o2 sensor anyway's... If it's running that rich, it's either your AFM, Water temp sensor, or possibly a bad fuel regulator (Most likely not though) or really bad fuel injectors...

what if your car does not require a cat? can you use a dog instead?

WTF?! California, the smog nazi capital of the US, only goes back 20 years? Utah requires emissions for all cars 67 & newer... that rule hasn't changed in years.

really, yeah its like a 20 yr. deadline...someday even my car won't need smog, but by then it'll probably be yours, then mine again...haha

In Vegas Its 68... How Can That Be? We Have Nothing But Casinos And Dirt.

duowing 12-10-2006 04:01 PM

Here in Ohio, after 25 years you don't need emissions, because then it's a classic car. Also I hear in the next year or so at least out this way we're supposed to be doing away with emissions tests.

SHADY280 12-10-2006 05:39 PM

up here in b.c. we have the same emmisions program as cali. it sucks
