some exhaust questions

ok, i tried to search up some stuff. im going to be buying an exhaust system, i know the headers are pretty much a bolt on thing. the only thing im not so sure about is the catback. and this will need to pass CA smog. i planned on buying these headers, but im not sure what catback to get, b/c i dont know what to buy. i also planned on buying a jdm mufffler, mainly for looks. so can someone send me a previous thread or help me out? thanks!

#1: Just to make sure you know what a "cat-back" system is... it is literally a kit from the catalytic converter back. If you get a header, and cat-back kit, you will still be using the stock pipe between the header and cat.

#2: When you say "jdm muffler" I assume you mean the massive rice rocket coffee can muffler? <which isn't "JDM"> It will neither increase performance, nor "look" good unless you are going for the ghetto look.

#3: I suggest installing a very good header, then take the car to a local trusted exhaust shop & have them build you a custom 2.5" (hopefully mandrel bent) exhaust system.

Just my "3" pennies.

on the headers i said i was gunna buy, it includes the header and the cat, correct? it shows it in the picture.

and as for the jdm muffler, i just want something thats a little bigger, nothing too crazy.

oh and do you know what a ballpark rate would be to build a custom exaust like that?

MSA doesn't sell cats. What you see there is an extension. Some states won't accept some after market converters so ask the smog station before you waste money. Shop around but you can get the rest of the pipe from MSA too.

hmm, my '79 doesn't have a cat, because it's a federal model, I'm not sure about 280Z's, but they're kinda older, so it would only make sense that their federal models don't have cats...

What I would do is just run without a cat and say screw you to everyone and have a friends car smog your car for you :P

mine has a cat. 280s had a regular model and a california model. and im 99% sure its a california model, when flipping through the fsm it showed some stuff only the CA models had, and my car had it.

anyways, my friend says he knows someone who can do that, but its like 300 bucks. and dont you have to do it (smog) every year?

Yea, I have to smog my car every year, but it's only $60 for me to have a smog done for my car :P

(of course, I live in Las Vegas, and my car's a '79 so there could be some differences there...)
