Performance Parts

Where is the best place to find a variety of upgrades for the L26 motor and drivetrain? I'm looking for everything from alternators to camshafts to bearing caps (and everything inbetween) for the motor, and other drivetrain parts. I would like to make 300-450HP just on the motor. No nitrous, no turbos. The only possibility would be a supercharger, but I want the engine bay to stay somewhat clean and assessable.

Also, what is the weakest point in the car? My junk-body 260Z is going to become a drag style car, but it has to be streetable power.

for shame! search function, number one rule of forums.... coulda answered most of your questions or at least helped you ask LESS vague questions. so ill answer the ones i dont think you can find super quickly. 300-450 on an ALL motor L6 is dreaming your ass off. you can pray for 300 on a stroker high compression motor with triple webers or ITB's. its a fawkin build and a half. and if its a drag car with streetable power, dude, go turbo. its the only way.

as for weakest point, no real such thing, but if you want big power a little frame strengthaning, just a little, and cage would be good, and the trannies and rear diffs in these car wont take much more over 200hp.

Well, I appreciate your response even if it was mostly in a negative tone. I had already searched, and that got me to zdriver.com from google and yahoo. Since their searches didn't come up with much, and my quick viewing of threads around, I thought it would be best to become a member and ask.

I figured that it wouldn't be possible to do without a major power-adder. Although turbos are the most efficient power adder available, this is a build I am doing in my garage, and a supercharger will be less scraped knuckles and curses than a turbo system.

As to the rearend and transmission, what are available for options? I would like a 5-speed or better manual that can handle some horsepower. And yes, I will search the threads next.

snwbrderphat540 01-12-2008 10:55 AM

options are unlimited if you can fabricate. most popular though for high HP power applications are a Z32 transmission and a early 90's Q45 rear end since they sell most of teh parts to complete those swaps on sights like arizonazcar.com

and that wasnt negative, not from me you dont have to worry about that. thats actually how i found this sight as well. but search on here we have a search function at the top of the page. and you can find mod options and such. and if you pick up maximum boost by corky bell this wonderful book explaining turbo systems, you wouldnt think they were so spooky after all. they are very very simple systems and with the 81-83 280ZX's using the same drivline but offering a turbo option you have that swap right there, and can achieve that 450hp level much easier-ly.

go over hybridz.org and do alot of reading. you have to be ready to pay a good penny on all motor for those numbers. rebello can build you a motor to that specs but it wont be cheap. yes nissan does have 5 speeds that can handle more hp then that.(ex.sx tranny=300 hp or the 87-89 turbo tranny has the same guts as a z32 tranny which they both can handle more then ever wont on a z)

snwbrderphat540 01-12-2008 11:21 AM

well, the Z32 manual tranny has handled jsut about anything tossed at it so far. lol. its a very resilient transmission. and if you ever want to ditch your SX tranny setup sporker..... gimme a holla!!!!!

Niku-Sama 01-12-2008 01:31 PM

is the z32 tranny your talkin about the one they used in the very last run of the z31?
are the bell housings the same?

well i was looking for the same thing you were, about 300 hp pn the stock motor. i did some research and worked with a guy who builds rebuilt engins and we built an engine with about 300 hp. we used ...
big bore kit
p90 heads
3 angle valve job
stage 3 performance cam set
f54 l28 block
89mm flat top pistons
240z rods
ld28 maxima crank
comprtition head gasket
new bearings new gasket set
new oil pump
new water pump
new timing chin set
coated 3-2-1 header
new injectors
performance flywheel
inlarged throttle body
and a cold air intake
and performance exhaust
most of these products can either be found on http://www.thezstore.com/store/merchant.mvc? or http://arizonazcar.com/ some of the parts he had to search for because there hard to find

260zturbo 01-13-2008 12:08 PM

thats close to a 6+k motor. so easy just to turbo and turn the boost up till things break i guess. guess if u want a n/a motor what he has is great. with that amount of money a 383 or even a 350 could easily do what your looking for.

Niku-Sama 01-13-2008 11:05 PM

alot of that are definitly yard parts though

p90 head
Diesel maxima cam
240 rods
f54 block
and the cold air could be obtained for fairly cheap in decent condition needing some or no work.

it all depends on how you wanna do it though
is the maxima cam that much longer lift/duration?

its maxima CRANK that you need, it has a longer through to the assembly so it is what basically makes it a STROKER motoer.

and they are very hard to find or if you buy one its very expensive.

Niku-Sama 01-14-2008 11:33 PM

oh i thought he said cam, crank still....unless i am sitting on cache of diesel maximas here which i doubt, they arent hard to find HOW EVER in california they have stupid laws so they may be hard to find there since they were all yarded or shipped off some place else like here which isnt to far away

i would still think the cam and the head would be different being diesel and all

snwbrderphat540 01-14-2008 11:34 PM

fine, if you find a maxima diesel crank, grab one for me please.

Niku-Sama 01-14-2008 11:36 PM

ok dokie
how much, since you say theyre rare and all

snwbrderphat540 01-14-2008 11:39 PM

lol, hell no buddy. i will compensate your for gas a 8 bucks an hour you work on getting it out. your the one that says you can find them so easily.

Niku-Sama 01-14-2008 11:45 PM

alright i'll rember that

"with that amount of money a 383 or even a 350 could easily do what your looking for."

A 383 fits in that bay? I have a good running 383's lying around here, making 273 HP, 285 ft/lbs if I remember correctly... (was built for a dirt-tracker) What would I need to get it to fit? I'm assuming I have to modify to get a dodge tranny in there, along with the rest of the drivetrain... Well, before I jump overboard, how difficult is it to fit the 383 to fit AND run?
